Complements the Existing IBM 6400 Family

The IBM 6400 Model 20 joins the 6400 family in providing reliable impact line printers. The 6400 family now has models with maximum print speeds from 500 to 2,000 lpm, and with an array of features which can be used to customize the printer for use in many applications, and for many attachments. The breadth of the 6400 family offers common features across the range of printer speeds. This family approach lets you fill all your line matrix printing requirements from one vendor.

Operational Commonality

You can operate the IBM 6400 Model 20 in the same way as the other 6400 models, and similarly to the Models 6408 and 6412. This model demonstrates a commonality in the product line with functions such as operator panel messages, loading and unloading of forms, and the availability of coax, twinax, IPDS, and Proprinter III XL, Epson FX 1050, Printronix P-Series, Printronix P-Series XQ Variant, and Printronix Serial Matrix emulations.

6400 Printer Management Utility

The IBM 6400 family can be easily managed by the IBM Printer Management Utility. This utility provides the ability to remotely manage multiple printers by organizing the printers in a single database, and downloading software and printer settings from a host computer. A virtual operator panel is provided that can be used to configure printers.

The 6400 Printer Management Utility requires that the IBM 6400 be attached to the host system with the internal Ethernet adapter (#4177, #4178).

Enhancements to the 6400 Printer Management Utility

Using the 10/100BaseT Ethernet card, IBM's Printer Management Utility (PMU) now automatically provides alert e-mail notification of printer messages to the appropriate operator(s). The PMU will proactively send a message to alert the appropriate individual(s) for various printer situations that require operator action. For example, when a ribbon low message is generated by a printer, an e-mail will be sent.

Additionally, printer settings can be downloaded to multiple printers and a virtual operator panel accessed for each printer.

This function is included on 6400-20 printers.

Windows Driver Enhancements

The Windows 2000, Windows XP, and the Windows NT drivers have been enhanced in order to significantly improve performance when printing from Windows applications. This performance boost comes from using a graphics language to send the data from the Windows platform to the printer. The improvement results in a significant reduction in the volume of data that is sent to the printer, and a noticeable increase in throughput.

These drivers will be shipped on 6400-20 printers.

Enabling New Applications

Features including IPDS and IGP/Code V (both Printronix emulations) provide options for support of bar code and graphics applications unmatched on any single predecessor IPDS or non-IPDS IBM printer.

IBM 6400 Model 20 Print Quality and Print Speed versus Band Printers

The versatility of the line matrix printing is causing a shift from fixed character printing provided by the band printers, such as the IBM 4245 and the IBM 6262, to the more flexible technology of the 6400 printer family. The replacement of band printers by line matrix technology is in addition to the many other IBM 6400 applications.

The increased speed of the IBM 6400 Model 20 (up to 2,000 lpm draft and up to 1,800 lpm in data processing mode) increases the opportunity to replace older band printers. The IBM 6400 line matrix printers utilize the latest technology in order to meet the increasing demands for flexibility and efficiency.

Dual Hammerbank Technology

The IBM 6400 Model 20 utilizes a high-speed dual hammerbank printing assembly that consists of print hammers arranged in two rows, with 78 print hammers per row. By contrast, the IBM 6400 Model 15 utilizes one print hammer row with 102 hammers. The dual hammerbank enables the increased print speed of the Model 20.

These hammers are used to strike the ribbon and print dots on paper. Graphics, bar-codes, and characters are formed from the dots.

IBM 6400 Model 20 Advantages versus Band Printers

Advantages of the IBM 6400 line matrix printers over band printers include:

  • Full graphics and bar code capability
  • No need to change bands for different font styles
  • Lower acoustics
  • Much lower power consumption
  • Greater ease of use
  • Integrated network attach
  • Hot Port switching
  • Powerful remote management
  • Excellent reliability
  • Lower Total Cost of Printing (TCOP)

Considerations for Replacing Band Printers with Line Matrix Printers

While Line Matrix Printers like the IBM 6400 Model 20 offer many advantages over band printers, the following should be considered when replacing band printers with line matrix printers:

  • Printer Attachment:
    • Some of today's installed band printers are attached via ESCON and Parallel Channels that are not available on the IBM 6400 family.
  • Fully Formed Character Print Quality:
    • Band printers deliver fully formed (typewriter like) print quality. While the 6400-20 can deliver quality printing, the image may not be equivalent to that printed on a band printer.
  • Print Speeds:
    • The print speed attained by a band printer is dependent on many factors that include:
      • Number of characters in Print band
      • Speed of Host attachment
      • Characteristics of the print job
      • Rated speed of the Band Printer Model vs. rated IBM 6400 print speed
    • These factors must be evaluated prior to proposing to replace legacy band printers with the IBM 6400.
    • The print speed of the IBM 6400 Model 20 in various printing modes is summarized in a table in the Supplemental Information section.
  • Print Quality on Multi-Part Forms:
    • While band printers typically produce superior and images on the first copy, the multi-part images tend to be light and fuzzy. This occurs because the hammer energy is distributed across the complete character, which minimizes the energy available to compress multi-part forms. With line matrix printers, the energy is transferred to each individual dot and the multi-part images are of better quality.

Power Stacker

This feature provides an optional power stacker for the IBM 6400 Model 20. The power stacker can only be ordered on an initial order for a new printer. It cannot be added to an installed printer.

The stacker is fully enclosed within the printer cabinet. Forms can have the following characteristics:

  • Single-part forms can have weights from 15 to 100 lbs.
  • Multi-part forms can be up to 6 part, with or without carbons.
  • Form width can be from 3 inches to 16 inches.
  • Form height (length) can be from 5 to 12 inches.

During printing, a vertically movable paper guide stacks the printed output. Non-marking pinch rollers allow for varying paper thickness and provide constant tension on the paper. The pinch rollers are conductive to reduce the electrostatic charge buildup on the paper.

Two infrared beams sense the paper height and cause the frame position to be controlled as the paper height increases. A paper motion detector mounted at the pinch roller station monitors proper paper movement. If a jam occurs in the stacker, the motion detector senses it and stops the printer.

There is a stacker control panel mounted inside the rear of the printer. The operator sets up the stacker operation from the stacker control panel. Two LEDs indicate power on and online conditions. Push buttons are provided for on/off line, form feed, stacker up, and stacker down.

The stacker operates by raising and lowering the stacking mechanism to adjust to the stack height.

The output stacking capacity is approximately 3,000 sheets of 18 lb. single-part forms.

EuroReady

The IBM 6400 Model 20 is EuroReady, and can print the euro symbol. The host software must be capable of sending the correct euro symbol information to the printer.

The following Web site provides comprehensive information on the euro-ready status of all IBM products:

https://www.ibm.com/euro

Product Positioning

The IBM 6400 Model 20 enhances the IBM 6400 family. It includes all the features and functions of the current family and provides increased print speed.

The IBM 6400 Model 20 can be used on many systems including the iSeries, zSeries, pSeries, IBM S/390, AS/400, RS/6000, IBM PC and Netfinity servers, and IBM-compatible PCs and LANs.

Connectivity options for the 6400 family include the following:

  • ASCII serial/parallel interface
  • IBM coax and twinax
  • Network LAN attachment

The IBM 6400 can also be used on many non-IBM systems supporting ASCII serial/parallel interfaces.

The IBM 6400 is capable of addressing various graphics and bar code applications using Intelligent Graphics Processor emulations of IGP or Code V (both Printronix emulations) through optional features #4841 and #4846. Either of these features can be used with the coax/twinax attachment to replace older non-IBM printers which were coax or twinax attached. In addition, to provide an even more versatile printer when the coax/twinax or Ethernet options are selected, either feature can be combined with IPDS.

The IBM 6400 family of mid-range, heavy-duty line matrix printers replaces the IPDS, SCS, and ASCII models of the IBM 4234 line matrix printers, and expands the print speed and monthly print capacity for growing print requirements.

The IBM 6400 Line Matrix Printer family can be used by work groups for printing internal business, office, and customer documents. Potential applications exist in many industries, including distribution, transportation, retail, and wholesale.

The IBM 6400 Model 20 is best suited for environments that require hardware reliability and high-quality (in terms of character formation and readability) legible output, but do not require, nor expect, to use the printer for the main purpose of generating documents utilizing NLQ, where typewriter-like print quality is expected.

Compatibility / Differences

  • The IBM Proprinter III XL emulation is very similar to the protocol used by the IBM 4202-003 Proprinter, but contains more features. This protocol enables the IBM 6400 line printer to closely emulate a moving-head serial matrix printer but does not support downloaded fonts.
  • Epson emulation does not support downloaded characters or print justification. In addition, NLQ compresses to 17.1 CPI, not 20 CPI.
  • For Printronix emulations, differences in supported fonts and control codes may exist between the IBM 6400 and Printronix printers. Downloaded character overlays and downloaded character sets are not supported. Detailed information on supported fonts and control codes can be found in the ASCII Programmer's Reference (S544-5635).
  • For Printronix P-Series XQ Variant, the IBM 6400 only does condensed print at 15 CPI like the Printronix P600, but unlike the P300, which did condensed print at either 13.3 or 16.7 CPI.
  • Emulation differences may exist between the IBM 6400-008 with Epson 1050 FX emulation and the Printronix MVP 150B which used Epson MX emulation.
  • Application differences may exist between the IBM 6400 and the Printronix MVP 150C printers because of additional print quality modes which the 6400 does not support.
  • Printronix printers with an "L" as part of the model designation indicates the printer has the capability of printing smaller dots. The IBM 6400 will print text-only applications that are printed by the "L" series printer, however applications requiring the printing of other than text are not

Limitations

  • Maximum forms length of 24 inches.
  • Maximum forms width of 17 inches (including tear strips) or 16 inches (without tear strips).

Note: If the rear exit of the pedestal models is used, there is a maximum forms width of 16 inches, including tear strips.

  • Uses 15 pound (56 grams/square meter or 6.8 Kg) to 100 pound cardstock (163 grams per square meter or 45.36 Kg) stock, with a maximum thickness of 0.025 inches (0.0635 cm).
  • Maximum print line of 13.6 inches.
  • Friction feed paper handling is not supported.
  • Checking the readability of the application is necessary when using high speed (draft mode) fonts requiring greater than 15 CPI for critical applications.
  • Processing of forms with black or dark-colored backing, or forms with see-through plastic or cellophane-covered openings or windows, may give false End-of-Forms (EOF) signals. RPQ S02392 (factory-installed) or S02394 (field-installed) may be ordered to provide a modified EOF switch to handle these types of forms.
  • Downloaded characters are not supported in Proprinter, Epson, pSeries, pSeries XQ Variant or Printronix Serial Matrix emulations.
  • Due to the variation in carbonless forms' type and age, readability of more than 4-part forms should be assured before using for critical applications.
  • Compatibility differences may exist when replacing or coexisting with older printers due to technology differences, product and application customization, and emulation differences.
  • The IBM coax/twinax feature will not support pSeries or EVFU control codes coming from the host. As a result, the C/T option may not plug and play with some older applications running on an installed Printronix printer. In that case, the Multi-Platform Interface coax/twinax feature should be selected.
  • The coaxial portion of the IBM coax/twinax feature of the IBM 6400-20 is subject to the following limitations, and the following features are not supported:
    • Minimum dot matrix of 9 wide by 8 high.
    • Minimum dot matrix of 4 or 7 wide by 8 high.

    • Minimum dot matrix of 9 wide by 8 high
    • Minimum dot matrix of 4 or 7 wide by 8 high
    • Print lines greater than 198 characters
  • IBM 6400 vs 4234 IPDS Comparisons -- 4234 Emulation Differences
    • The 4234 emulation will not support Load Symbol Sets (LSS).
    • The 4234 emulation will use Courier for all Near Letter Quality (NLQ) mode printing, whereas 4234 NLQ mode was Gothic for 13.3, 16.7 and 18 CPI.
    • The dot sizes are different. Also, the 6400 has a single dot size versus three with the 4234. For bar code applications, some combinations of unit module width, wide-to-narrow ratio, and element height may affect read rates.
    • The 4234 emulation will report image and font resolution of 120 x 144 pel, compared to 144 x 144 pel in the 4234. This will cause images to change size in the vertical dimension.
    • Proportional Space Mode (PSM) is not the same. See the Compatibility charts.
  • IBM 6400 vs 4234 IPDS Comparisons -- 6400 Deviations:
    • The 6400 will report Loaded Font command set (LF2) in the Sense Type Module (STM), but will not support Load Symbol Set (LSS).

(#4841) IGP and Code V (Printronix Emulations) Initial Order Only

(#4846) IGP and Code V (Printronix Emulations) MES Order Only

IGP (Printronix Emulation)

The IGP (Intelligent Graphics Processor) feature is a simple programming language for creating graphics in printers equipped with the IGP board. IGP Printronix emulation (also sometimes called PGL) creates on-line forms, bar codes, and has a variety of alphanumeric text-generation capabilities. These capabilities are detailed below:

  • ON-LINE FORM AND LABEL GENERATION - Makes it easy to create forms or labels with the "pre-printed" look. Graphics capabilities include boxes, vertical and horizontal lines with user-selectable thickness, logos, and special alphanumeric print features. Forms and graphic designs can be duplicated horizontally and vertically.
  • SELECTABLE BAR CODES - Provides the appropriate bar code using standard wide-to-narrow ratios. Bar codes available are:
    • Code 39 (also called Code 3 of 9)
    • Interleaved 2 of 5
    • UPC-A
    • UP-E
    • MSI A through D
    • Code 128 Subset B and C
    • EAN-8
    • EAN-13
    • POSTNET
    • Royal Mail

Note: Both UPC and EAN bar codes can also specify add-on data.

  • EXPANDED AND COMPRESSED CHARACTER PRINT - Alphanumeric height and width are controlled independently for a wide range of character sizes up to 113 times the standard character size (up to 9.9 inches wide and tall). Compressed print sizes of 12, 13, 15 and 17 characters per inch (CPI) are available.
  • ROTATED ALPHANUMERICS - Permits new concepts in font design. Normal, expanded and compressed character strings can be rotated 90 degrees clockwise, counterclockwise, or printed upside down.
  • LOGOS - created using alphanumeric commands and add a variety of print and shading features, for a "customized" appearance to forms, reports, and labels.
  • REVERSED PRINT - for text, logos and forms, permits highlighting and contrasting by 'printing' white characters on a dark background.
  • AUTOMATIC INCREMENT / DECREMENT CAPABILITY - allows batch form processing. You can identify individual numeric and bar code data fields, which includes automatic increment or decrement functions.

IGP is an emulation that allows you to print sophisticated graphics and bar codes. Depending on what the printer is doing, it is always in a particular Mode, which is transparent to the user.

When the printer is receiving text, or printing text, it is in Normal Mode. Any time the printer is on and is not processing IGP commands, it is in Normal Mode. When a Create Form command is issued, the printer moves from the Normal Mode to the Create Form Mode. During this phase, the user sends text, images, and bar code data to the IGP. All of this data is stored in memory. An End statement terminates the IGP data string and the printer returns to Normal Mode.

You can create as many forms as you wish and store them in your host. You can also save the forms in the emulation memory. All forms have file names. You may want to print the form, label it, and store it for future reference. Or, you may devise another method for easy retrieval. These forms can then be downloaded from your host to the printer. When you Execute a form, you can print it as many times as you wish. This saves time from downloading the form each time you want to print it.

The IGP - Printronix Emulation Programmers Reference Manual (S246-0151) is included with this feature and explains the Modes and Commands of IGP in detail.

Code V (Printronix Emulation)

The Code V feature is the QMS(TM)-compatible Intelligent Graphics Processor software designated for the IBM 64XX family of impact line matrix printers. Code V emulates the QMS Code V Version II programming language to produce on-line forms, bar code, and supports many alphanumeric text-generation capabilities. Code V Printronix emulation (also sometimes called VGL) graphics processing features are detailed below:

  • ON-LINE FORM AND LABEL GENERATION - makes it easy to create forms or labels with the "pre-printed" look for each application. Code V Printronix emulation programs control all graphics functions, dramatically reducing host computer programming and processing time. Graphics capabilities include boxes, vertical and horizontal, solid and dashed lines with a variety of thicknesses, logos, and special alphanumeric print features. Forms and graphic designs can be duplicated horizontally and vertically.
  • VARIABLE BAR CODES - allows bar codes for your applications to print easily with standard and user-defined ratios in vertical and horizontal orientations. Available bar codes are:
    • Codabar
    • Code 39 (also called Code 3 of 9)
    • Code 128
    • Code 128-UCC with Subsets A, B and C
    • Interleaved 2 of 5
    • UPC-A
    • UPC-E
    • UPC Shipping
    • POSTNET
    • EAN-8
    • EAN-13
    • MSI
    • Royal Mail

The IBARC bar code command prints bar codes in four orientations; horizontal, rotated 90, rotated 180, or rotated 270 degrees.

  • EXPANDED AND COMPRESSED PRINT - draws attention where needed. Alphanumeric height and width are controlled independently for a tremendous range of character sizes, up to 9.9 inches wide and tall. Five compressed print sizes are available - 12, 13.33, 15, 17.41 and 20 characters per inch (CPI); permitting up to 170 columns in an 8.5 inch printed area (20 CPI).
  • ROTATED ALPHANUMERICS - permits new concepts in form design. Normal, expanded, and compressed character strings can be rotated 90 degrees clockwise, counterclockwise, or printed upside down.
  • LOGOS - are easy to create using alphanumeric commands and a variety of print and shading features, for a "customized" appearance to forms, reports and labels. Additionally, the registered trademark (R), copyright (C), TUV, GS-Mark, UL, and CSA symbols are provided as standard designs. Custom symbols can also be defined.
  • REVERSED AND SHADED PRINT - permits highlighting and contrasting by "printing" white characters on a dark background, or white characters on a gray shaded background. Various levels or patterns of gray shading and reverse printing can be combined with the many other print features to create distinctive designs.
  • AUTOMATIC INCREMENT / DECREMENT CAPABILITY - Allows batch form processing. Individual numeric and bar code data fields can be identified and automatically incremented or decremented by any amount beginning from any specified number.
  • MULTINATIONAL CHARACTER SETS - Provides 32 sets; each 96 characters in length. This feature also allows you to create your own character sets using characters defined and stored in the font memory.

The Code V - Printronix Emulation Programmers Reference Manual (S246-0150) is included with this feature and explains the Modes and Commands of Code V in detail.

(#4895) Power Stacker (Initial Order Only)

This feature provides an optional power stacker for the IBM 6400 Model 20. The power stacker cannot be ordered as an MES, and installed in the field. It can only be ordered on an initial order for a new printer.

The stacker is fully enclosed within the printer cabinet.

During printing, a vertically movable paper guide stacks the printed output. Non-marking pinch rollers allow for varying paper thickness and provides constant tension on the paper. The pinch rollers are conductive to reduce the electrostatic charge buildup on the paper.

Two infrared beams sense the paper height and cause the frame position to be controlled as the paper height in-creases.

Two LEDs indicate power on and on-line conditions. Push buttons are provided for on/off line, form feed, stacker up and stacker down.

The stacker operates by raising and lowering the stacking mechanism to adjust to the stack height.
