- True network paper handling options
Compact and incredibly functional, the IBM- Network Printer 17 is the ideal workhorse for medium to large workgroups. Sophisticated paper handling (including a secure mailbox option), high throughput at up to 17 pages per minute and simultaneous support for LAN and host environments make this printer a top performer for demanding workgroups. Shared environments Today's environments require support of multiple printer data streams. The Network Printer 17 supports PCL5e and optionally, Adobe- PostScript- Level 2, and IBM's traditional AFPTM/IPDSTM as well as SCS. Native support of these data streams allows for consolidation of multiple platform, application-specific printers to one Network Printer 17. The Network Printer 17 supports all standard network interfaces. The bi-directional parallel interface is a standard feature, and two of the four additional attachment cards can be installed simultaneously. All of these are active and available for printing. The Network Printer 17 automatically switches among printer data streams, interfaces and networks. With the installation of IBM's Network Printer Manager (NPM) utility, systems administrators can install, configure, monitor and manage the Network Printer 17 easily from remote locations. The NPM utility was developed using the industry-standard SNMP printer MIB, ensuring future migration support and compatibility. Flexible paper handling The Network Printer 17 has numerous paper handling features that ensure maximum flexibility. The Network Printer 17 comes standard with two media input trays expandable to five, providing a maximum input capacity of 1,350 sheets plus 75 envelopes. It also comes standard with an internal duplex capability for two-sided printing. Because this feature is installed inside the printer, there is no increase in space requirements. Sophisticated output handling options allow easy job separation in shared environments. These include a 500-sheet offset jogger that shifts the printed output between print jobs and a secure 10-bin mailbox. This output stacking option provides individual mailbox bins that are lockable with optional password access codes. Superior performance IBM's workhorse Network Printer 17 offers amazingly fast, 17-page-per-minute throughput due to its high-performance, RISC-based controller. The printer maintains top performance in network environments even while switching among multiple connections and data protocols.

(1) Page Protect is an Op-panel setting in the PCL menu and PS menu. It comes up on the Op-panel as "PAGEPROT". The default setting is "AUTO". In "AUTO" mode, the printer has the intelligence to know if there is a potential memory shortage. If there is not enough memory to print a page, the printer will then use compression algorithms. These compression algorithms will provide the printer with the ability to print the page even though there is not enough memory. An impact to print performance and print quality can be experienced.
If "PAGEPROT" is set to "ON", the compression algorithms will not be used. If a print job requires more memory, the printer will not print the page and will not post a "30 MEMORY OVERFLOW".
(2) In the Op-panel memory configuration menu there are two items called "PCL SAVE" and "PS2 SAVE". For both of these items the default setting is "OFF". This setting provides the capability to save PCL or PostScript data stream resources while switching between PCL or PostScript emulations. The default setting does not provide the saving capability. When "PCL SAVE" or "PS2 SAVE" is "ON", resources that were downloaded for the given emulation will be preserved between emulation switching. Examples of downloaded resources are: fonts, overlays, and macros.

Network Printer Resource Utility (NPRU) NPRU is an application that provides a repository (resource inventory) for fonts and overlays (macros) on a workstation with access to an IBM Network Printer. Once a font or overlay has been added to the NPRU inventory, it can be downloaded to temporary or permanent RAM on the printer or to a Flash or Hard Drive option if available. The font formats supported are PCL Intellifonts and PostScript Type 1. Fonts and overlays that are downloaded are available to workstation applications when the Network Printer drivers are selected. The NPRU is a separate program that uses the printer drivers to download. It is supported for the same OS/2 and Windows operating systems as listed above for the drivers, except for Windows NT. The NPRU for OS/2 PCL is shipped with the printer and available on the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page. The NPRU for PostScript OS/2 and Windows is available from the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page at: http://www.printers.ibm.com Network Utilities The utilities listed below are shipped with the optional Network Cards. These utilities are used to configure and setup the Network Cards for the following operating systems: Utility Operating System Protocols ------- ---------------- --------- LAN Server (1) IBM LAN Server 3.0 and higher NetBIOS, TCP/IP (Requires OS/2 2.11 or higher client)
TES/Kermit (2) Novell NetWare 2.15, 2.3, 3.0, IPX/SPX 3.11, 3.12, 4.0, 4.01, 4.1 (5)
AIX (3) IBM AIX 3.2.5 or 4.1 TCP/IP
LAN Manager Microsoft LAN Manager NETBIOS 2.0 and later
(1) The LAN Server Printer Utility redirects as many as 16 printer queues to IBM Network Printers installed on your network using TCP/IP or NetBIOS protocols. To use the LAN Server Printer Utility with the TCP/IP protocol, you need to have TCP/IP enabled on your server. No additional software is required to use the NetBIOS protocol.
(2) Novell workstations require the TES terminal emulation program and Kermit to permit remote log on to an IBM printer network card.
TES is a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) program that can be loaded from the DOS prompt or from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. TES must be loaded before the Kermit program can be started.
Kermit is a terminal emulator program that works with TES to let a DOS workstation communicate with an IBM printer network card, so commands can be used to configure the IBM printer network card.
(3) The AIX Utilities provide a way to configure the network printer LAN adapter card using bootp. Files are also provided which allow printing to an IBM network attached printer, but the AIX printer driver must already be installed on the AIX system before using the utility. Similar utilities are availble for HP-UX, SunOS, and Sun Solaris operating systems.
(4) Network utilities will be shipped on diskettes with the Network Cards. Network Utilities are also available from the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page at: http://www.printers.ibm.com
(5) Using PConsole or NWAdmin in a NetWare 4.x environment, the printer network cards can be configured to run bindery emulation in a bindery context in the NDS tree.
IBM Network Printer Manager (NPM) Utility IBM will provide the Network Printer Manager (NPM) Utility with an easy to use graphical interface in US English for network administrators. The initial versions of NPM will run on three client platforms: - IBM OS/2
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Windows NT (3.51 and 4.0)
NPM will let users install and configure IBM Network Printers in LANs, including Novell 3.12 and 4.X networks in bindery emulation (printer network cards can be NDS-configured with NWAdmin). NPM will also monitor and provide network printer status using the industry standard, open systems SNMP (System Network Management Protocol) Printer MIB and will support private enterprise MIBs for monitoring and managing network printers. Some examples of the information available using SNMP are on/off-line, paper jam, out of toner, output tray full, input tray empty, and information about the printer's configuration, capacity, and number of pages printed. NPM for OS/2 uses the TCP/IP protocol to configure printers to receive print jobs via TCP/IP, NetBIOS, or AppleTalk protocols. NPM for Windows 95 and Windows NT uses the TCP/IP and IPX/SPX protocols to configure printers to receive print jobs using IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, or AppleTalk protocols. NPM will be available from the IBM Printing Systems Company Home Page at: http://www.printers.ibm.com Novell NetWare Support The following levels of Novell NetWare connectivity are supported via Token-Ring and Ethernet IBM Network Cards: - As a PSERVER or RPRINTER with NetWare 3.11, 3.12, or 4.x in bindery emulation mode
- As a PSERVER or NPRINTER with NetWare 4.x in NDS mode

To support the BCOCA tower for printing of bar codes, the OCR-A and OCR-B fonts and their corresponding codes pages (892 and 893) must be resident in the printer. These are supported as shown in the "4028 Compatibility IPDS Resident Font Set" table. Code page 1303 is also resident to be used for 128 bar codes.
SCS Data Stream Font Mapping The coax or twinax interface uses PCL fonts when operating with a non-IPDS host data stream. Imbedding of PCL and PJL commands in the SCS data stream is possible. The printer selects and uses these PCL fonts differently depending on whether the attachment is coaxial or twinaxial. With the coaxial attachment, fonts can only be selected by specifying characters-per-inch (CPI). With the twinaxial attachment, fonts can be selected by specifying either CPI or an FGID (Font Global Identifier). SuppliesThe IBM Network Printer 17 is shipped with one toner cartridge. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure the availability of the necessary supply items for operation of the Network Printer 17, and to order and maintain an adequate stock of supplies. The components of the Usage Kit are part of the base printer. The following replacement supplies are available: Description Part Number Approximate Average Yield (1) ----------- ----------- ----------------------------- Toner Cartridge P/N 63H2401 10,000 impressions Usage Kit LV (2) P/N 63H2324 200,000 impressions
(1) Approximate average yield has been established with a coverage of 5%. An "impression" is defined as one side of a printed page. A duplex page would consist of two impressions. The printer is shipped with the fuser already installed.
(2) Includes a fuser and bias transfer roller
The above items are considered supplies and, as such, are not available through the parts system or included in the service agreement. The approximate average yields are not a warranty or guarantee of minimum life, and are provided to assist in initial supplies planning. Actual usage should be used to establish the supply's life in the end user's application. Many factors (for example, print coverage per page, machine settings, paper type and size, and environmental conditions) can affect supply life. Supply warranties are only for defects in materials and workmanship at the time of shipment/installation. They are not for print count life or normal wear and tear, nor for any print count minimum. Contact your place of purchase for warranty return instructions. IBM is committed to environmentally conscious programs for Network Printer supplies. A collection program for used printer cartridges has been established and return instructions are included in the supply item packaging, with free return shipping.
