The IBM 4247 Model 003 is compatible with previous IBM 4247 models and offers an internal Ethernet 10/100 BaseT adapter, as well as more flexible configuration options than the previous IBM 4247 models. All attachment options are now available on a single model. The Model 003 is a heavy-duty impact printer with a duty cycle of up to 20 million characters per month, and a full-size, full-function operator panel similar to those on the Model 001 and 002. Print qualities include DP mode (DP), DP Text mode (DP Text) and Near Letter Quality (NLQ). Typical applications include: invoices, office or internal business documents, as well as barcodes, labels, and multi-part forms.

  • Quiet operation
  • Exceptional forms handling flexibility
  • Heavy duty performance - Up to 20 million character per month duty cycle
  • Up to 700 characters per second (CPS) at 10 characters per inch (CPI)
  • Internal Ethernet 10/100 BaseT adapter for IPDS and ASCII
  • All attachment cards can be easily added or changed
  • Full-size and full-function 2-line by 40 character operator display
  • PC Parallel or PC 1284 Bi-Directional Parallel interface (for configurations without the Ethernet internal adapter)

The IBM 4247 Model 003 printer retains the strengths of previous models of the IBM 4247 family while providing an internal 10/100 BaseT Ethernet adapter for ASCII and IPDS and improved attachment configuration options. The base printer contains parallel support and the other configurations are optional.

Flexible Forms Handling

The IBM 4247 Printer provides exceptional forms handling flexibility. The base printer includes one continuous form tractor path as well as a manual cutsheet paper path. Another continuous forms tractor may be added to provide dual continuous forms paper paths. To obtain the most reliable forms capability both sets of tractors may be used for a single paper path. An Automatic Sheet Feed (ASF) with one, two, or three input bins for cutsheet paper may be added to the standard configuration. Envelopes are supported in ASF bin 1.

This remarkable forms handling flexibility can translate into a single printer performing work which formerly required two or more printers. Customers can load different forms into each tractor path and then enable the path which corresponds to the desired print job. Alternatively, the tractor paths can be parked to allow the use of the ASF or manual cut sheet functions.

Print speeds of the 4247-003 are up to 700/350/175 characters per second (CPS) in DP/DP Text/NLQ modes respectively.

Operator Panel

The 4247-003 includes the full-function full-size operator panel that is on models 001 and 002. It includes a 2-line by 40 character display, making messages and menus easy to understand.

Printer Data Stream Emulations

Emulation modes that assist with easy replacement of many older printers include:

ASCII emulation for the IBM Proprinter III XL, IBM 2381 Personal Printer and Epson FX
Coax emulations for the IBM 3268, IBM 3287, IBM 4224 and IBM 4230
Twinax emulations for the IBM 4214, IBM 4224 and IBM 4230
In addition, native IBM 4247 mode is selectable with each attachment.

Heavy Duty, Reliable Printing

The 4247-003 is a heavy duty printer with a duty cycle of up to 20 million characters per month. The 18 wire print head provides reliable printing in three quality modes, (DP, DP Text, and NLQ), on up to 8 part forms.

Parallel Attachment

The IBM 4247 Model 003 base printer includes a parallel port as standard. For the parallel port:

  • Datastreams supported are PPDS and Epson FX
  • Printers emulated are Proprinter III XL, IBM 2381 Personal Printer and Epson FX80 - 1170
Optional Twinax and Coax SCS Attachment Features The optional Coax SCS attachment:

    • Supports 3270/DSC/DSE and SCS datastreams
    • Emulates the IBM 3268/3287, IBM 4224 and IBM 4230 as well as providing native support for the IBM 4247
For the optional Twinax SCS attachment:
      • Printers emulated are IBM 4214 and IBM 4230
      • Datastream supported is PDS Each attachment also supports native IBM 4247 mode.

      • Optional Twinax and Coax IPDS Attachment Features

With the Coax IPDS Attachment (#4240, #4242) and Twinax IPDS Attachment (#4220, #4222) the 4247-003 can be driven by Advanced Function Presentation (AFP(TM)) applications supported by Print Services Facility (PSF(TM)) and GDDM(R).

        Optional Ethernet LAN Attachment Capability

Ethernet 10/100 BaseT Ethernet LAN attachment for either ASCII or IPDS is provided via the Ethernet adapters (#4270, #4272 for ASCII and #4280, #4282 for IPDS)

        These adapters:

      • Provide a fully integrated 10/100 BaseT Ethernet solution
      • Are easier to configure than previous 4247 Ethernet offerings
The IPDS adapter replaces the Ethernet I-Data RPQ (RPQ #8B4314), and can be used for either IPDS or ASCII. With either adapter, the 4247 parallel port is available. (The older ASCII Ethernet adapter, #4260, #4262 utilize the parallel port so that it is not available.)

Hot interface and hot port switching:

        • ASCII Parallel and ASCII LAN hot interface switching is supported
        • ASCII LAN TCP, LPR,Telnet, and FTP hot port switching is supported
        • Hot port switching between the IPDS LAN port and ASCII LAN ports is not supported. Manual switching between IPDS and ASCII is required to switch between these ports.
Protocols Supported by the Ethernet 10/100 BaseT Adapters The following protocols are supported by the Ethernet 10/100 BaseT adapters (feature numbers 4270, 4272, 4280, and 4282):

          • Ethernet II, SNAP, 802.2, 802.3 and following
          • TCP/IP (UDP, ARP, RARP, ICMP, PING, BOOTP, DHCP, FTP, PSF/AFP IPDS)
          • SMB/NetBIOS
          • SMTP
          • LPR/LPD
          • Direct Socket Printing
          • HTTP
Loading Network Configuration Settings The network configuration protocol and security settings can be set either from the Operator Panel or from a Web Browser. Detailed information is contained in the 4247 Ethernet NIC Installation Guide (G544-5480).

              Microsoft Windows Print Drivers

Print Drivers for Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000, and XP are shipped on the CD-ROM included with these features.

Current 4247 Network Print Server and IPDS LAN Attachment Capability

These Ethernet adapters provide a fully integrated Ethernet solution and normally will be the preferred Ethernet adapters.

Other LAN attachment capability is available via:

            • The Network Print Server features (#4121, #4124, #4164, #4165) provide network attachment via the parallel port for Token-Ring and Ethernet. The Network Print Servers plug into the printer parallel port. For Ethernet, the new Ethernet NIC features are installed in the 4247 expansion slot and the parallel port is still available. The Network Print Server and the above RPQs provide the capability for both LAN support and twinax, coax, or serial support on the same IBM 4247 Printer.
            • The I-Data 7913 (RPQ numbers 8B4313 and 8B4314) provides either Token-Ring or Ethernet LAN attachment for IPDS data for twinax and coax printers.
            • RPQ #8B4313 provides Token-Ring IPDS support. This RPQ is still required for IPDS Token-Ring. RPQ #8B4314 provides Ethernet IPDS support, and normally the Ethernet IPDS NIC, rather than this RPQ, will now be the preferred solution.
            • Neither of these RPQs can be installed when the Ethernet NIC features are installed.
While a Network Print Server and one of the I-Data 7913 RPQs (either RPQ 8B4313 or 8B4314) can both be installed on the same 4247-V03, only one of either the Network Print Server or the I-Data 7913 RPQ network attachments can be active at any time. Manual network switching between the ASCII (Network Print Server) and IPDS (I-Data RPQ) is required to switch between the attachments. While a Network Print Server and one of the Ethernet 10/100 NICs can be installed on the same 4247, only one of either the Network Print Server or the Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC attachments can be active at any time. Manual switching between the ASCII (Network Print Server) and the IPDS Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC is required to switch between the attachments.

Replacement, Addition, and Installation of Attachment Cards for Installed Printers

These Ethernet adapters can replace installed adapters on installed IBM 4247 Model 003 and V03 Printers.

The following table shows the allowable replacements and additions of attachment cards for installed IBM 4247-V03 and 4247-003 Printers, and the feature to order to replace or add an adapter. All of these replacements and additions are easily installed by customers, and do not require IBM Field Engineering for installation.

Note: (1) "Any Attachment" is Twinax IPDS, Twinax SCS, Coax SCS, Coax IPDS, Serial, Ethernet LAN, ASCII NIC, or IPDS NIC, and includes "no attachment", which is the standard parallel adapter.

Note:(2) May require new 4247 Licensed Internal Code provided with these features. The latest code may also be downloaded from vendor Web site (CPG International).

                Bulk Order for Optional Features

For most products, the quantity of any feature that can be ordered is the same as the maximum number of the feature allowed per machine. Since the IBM 4247-003 and 4247-V03 features are now all customer setup (for 4247 Model 003 with Licensed Internal Code Level 6.05 or higher), in some cases it is desirable to bulk order certain features so that machines can be easily reconfigured by Business Partners and end users. Thus, for these MES features, the maximum order quantity is normally 10, which is greater than the maximum that can be installed on one printer.

The maximum number of initial-order attachment features that can be ordered is one. Use the MES feature numbers for bulk orders.

A procedure to determine the level of code installed in a printer is explained below.

For easy identification of boxed printers that have code level 6.05 and higher, the printer part number printed on the box label has been changed from 01PXXXX to 75PXXXX (where XXXX can be any number). The 01PXXXX numbers were used on printers shipped prior to 6.05 code.

                IBM 4247-003 Print Throughput Improvement

The print speed of the IBM 4247-003 has been improved slightly for models with internal base code level 6.05 and higher. The improved code provides approximately a 5% greater throughput performance.

Procedure to Determine Base Code Level Installed in a 4247-003 Printer

The following procedure can be used to determine the code level in a 4247-003 printer.

              • Load forms in a tractor or manual cut-sheet tray
              • Press test key
              • Scroll until the printer displays "4247 Operator Print Tests Firmware information"
              • Press enter to print
              • Information on the code level is on the printout Latest ASCII NIC compared with Previous NIC

The latest ASCII Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC (FN #4270 and #4272) is generally compatible with the previous NIC feature (FN #4260 and #4262).

Latest IPDS NIC compared with Previous IPDS NIC

The ASCII-IPDS Ethernet 10/100 BaseT fully integrated NIC is generally compatible with the Idata 7913 external printer LAN attachment. A comparison follows:

Note: Printer intervention messages sent to the host from the latest IPDS NIC and previous Idata 7913 NIC are generally equivalent. Both implementations differ from IPDS Twinax and IPDS Coax attachments in the following areas.

                • Printer Cancel Print key cannot be used. Pressing this key will result in an "Invalid Key Press" operator panel message in the new NIC implementation.
                • Explicit device status messages are not returned to the host for out of paper and forms jam printer intervention conditions.

                Power Plug Adapter (#9801, 9802, 9803, 9804, 9805)

When attaching the Ethernet 10/100 BaseT Network Print Server (#4164) to the 4247 Printers, a Power Plug (Power adapter) is needed. One of the following Power Plugs must be ordered with each Network Print Server.

These adapters, with the appropriate power plug, are required to furnish the correct voltage and plug into an electrical outlet for the 10/100 BaseT Network Print Server (#4164). These adapters plug into an electrical outlet and transform the voltage to the voltage required by the Ethernet Network Print Server (FN 4164).

The IBM 4247-003 replaces the current IBM 4247 models of serial matrix printers by offering improved attachability and ease of configuration. The 4247-003 offers the same 700 CPS print speed and flexible forms handling of the earlier Model 001, while combining the datastream support of the Model A00 and 001.

The 4247-003 provides similar paper path capabilities as the 4232 and 4230. The key difference is that with the 4247-003, the various paper feeds can be installed simultaneously.

The 4247-003 and all features are customer setup.

The IBM 4247 Model 003 provides simplified host attachment capability with standard PC Parallel or PC 1284 Bi-Directional Parallel attachment. Optional attachments include:

                • Coax and Twinax SCS
                • Coax and Twinax IPDS
                • RS-232/RS-422 Serial
                • Ethernet IPDS or ASCI LAN attachment through the 10/100 BaseT Ethernet adapters
                • Token-Ring Type-1 and -3 via Network Print Servers

It includes a stacker and one input bin as standard. The stacker also serves as the output bin for the manual cut sheet input path. One or two additional bins may be added for a maximum of 3 input bins. Each automatic bin holds up to 120 sheets of variable width 80 gsm (20 lb) single-part paper. Multi-part forms (up to 3-part) can also be used. Input bin 1 will also support envelopes. The output stacker holds up to 150 sheets of 80 gsm (20 lb) single-part paper. Bin selection can be controlled by the host system or from the 4247-003 operator panel. All operator control is from the 4247 operator panel.

Paper meeting the following specifications is acceptable for use in the ASF. All other paper must be tested by the customer for suitable performance.

                Paper sizes (single or multi-part)

ASF Bin Paper Length Paper Width
                ------------ ------------------------ ---------------------
                Bin 1 (auto) 127-356 mm (5-14 in.) 153-305 mm (6-12 in.)
                Bin 2 (auto) 228.6-356 mm (9-14 in.) 153-305 mm (6-12 in.)
                Bin 3 (auto) 279.4-356 mm (11-14 in.) 153-305 mm (6-12 in.)

For most products, the quantity of any feature that can be ordered is the same as the maximum number of the feature allowed per machine. Since the IBM 4247-003 optional features are all customer installable, it is desirable, in some cases, to bulk order certain features so that machines can be easily re-configured by Business Partners and end-users. Thus, for the following features, the maximum order quantity is greater than the maximum that can be installed on one printer.
