Description

Complements the New IBM 6400 Family

The new IBM 6400 Model 014 joins the 6400 family in providing reliable impact line printers. With the addition of the Model 014, the 6400 family has models with maximum print speeds from 500 to 1400 lpm, and with an array of features which can be used to customize the printer for use in many applications, and for many attachments. The breadth of the family allows users to have common features across the range of printer speeds. This family approach allows customers to fill all line matrix printing requirements from one vendor.

Reliable, Heavy Duty, Quality Printer

Because of the overall quality and durability of these printers, there is no maximum suggested monthly usage.

Operational Commonality

You can operate the IBM 6400-014 in the same way as the other 6400 Models. Such functions as operator panel messages, loading and unloading of forms, and the availability of Proprinter III XL, Epson FX 1050, Printronix P-Series, Printronix P-Series XQ Variant, and Printronix Serial Matrix emulations demonstrate this commonality.

Enabling New Applications

Features including IPDS-coax or IPDS-twinax, and/or IGP or Code V (both Printronix emulations), provide options for support of bar code and graphics applications unmatched on any single predecessor IPDS or non-IPDS IBM printer.

In addition, the Multi-Platform Interface feature allows the IBM 6400-014 to replace many non-IBM printers which were twinax- or coax-compatibly attached to IBM systems. Since many of these non-IBM printers use command languages not supported by that IBM system, this allows upgrading to a new IBM printer with minimal or no modifications to current application programs.

Product Positioning

The Model 014 enhances the IBM 6400 family, by providing all the features and function of the rest of the family with a performance improvement over the current high-end Model 012. The Model 014 is well-suited to environments which require fast printing with low acoustics which includes both office and industrial environments.

The IBM 6400-014 can be used on many systems including IBM AS/400, IBM S/370 and S/390, IBM RS/6000, IBM PC, IBM PS/2, IBM-compatible PCs and LANs via various print servers. Connectivity options for the 6400 family allow, depending on customer requirements, for attachment to be via the serial or parallel interface, via the IBM coax/twinax feature, or via the Multi-Platform Interface (MPI) coax/twinax feature. The MPI feature would normally be selected when the customer needed to replace a non-IBM printer which was twinax or coax attached to an IBM system via the parallel port. The 6400-014 can also be used on many non-IBM systems supporting serial or parallel interfaces.

The IBM 6400 is capable of addressing various graphics and bar code applications using Intelligent Graphics Processor emulations of IGP or Code V (both Printronix emulations) through optional features #4840/4845 and #4850/4855. Either of these features can be used with either Coax/Twinax Interface feature to replace older non-IBM printers which were coax or twinax attached. In addition, when the IBM Coax/Twinax feature is selected, then either feature can be combined with selection of IBM's IPDS emulation, to provide an even more versatile printer in the IBM Coax/Twinax attachment environment.

The IBM 6400 family of mid-range, heavy-duty line matrix printers replaces the IPDS, SCS and ASCII models of the IBM 4234 line matrix printers, and expands the print speed and monthly print capacity for growing print requirements.

The IBM 6400 models have cross-industry applicability, although Service Sector industries such as insurance, finance, securities, transportation, retail and wholesale, offer the most potential. Within industries, work groups in medium and large enterprises will be addressed. The IBM 6400 Line Matrix Printer family will be used by work groups for printing internal business, office, and customer documents.

Technical Description

Performance

  • Printer throughput in lines per minute (LPM) is a factor of the selected font. Printing speed is independent of the number of characters configured in the character set repertoire. Print lines containing bold/emphasized (shadow) printing or elongated (double high) attributes will print at approximately one-half the rate shown in the table. Nominal print speeds for the 6400-014 at 6 lines per inch (LPI) are shown as follows:

Compatibility / Differences

  • The IBM Proprinter III XL emulation is very similar to the protocol used by the IBM 4202-003 Proprinter, but contains more features. This protocol enables the IBM 6400 line printer to closely emulate a moving-head serial matrix printer but does not support downloaded fonts.
  • Epson emulation does not support downloaded characters or print justification. In addition, NLQ compresses to 17.1 CPI, not 20 CPI.
  • For Printronix emulations, differences in supported fonts and control codes may exist between the IBM 6400 and Printronix printers. Downloaded character overlays and downloaded character sets are not supported. Detailed information on supported fonts and control codes can be found in the ASCII Programmer's Reference (S246-0118).
  • For Printronix P-Series XQ Variant, the IBM 6400 only does condensed print at 15 CPI like the Printronix P600, but unlike the P300, which did condensed print at either 13.3 or 16.7 CPI.
  • Emulation differences may exist between the IBM 6400-008 with Epson 1050 FX emulation and the Printronix MVP 150B which used Epson MX emulation.
  • Application differences may exist between the IBM 6400 and the Printronix MVP 150C printers because of additional print quality modes which the 6400 does not support.
  • Printronix printers with an "L" as part of the model designation indicates the printer has the capability of printing smaller dots. The IBM 6400 will print text-only applications that are printed by the "L" series printer, however applications requiring the printing of other than text are not
  • DAVFU, NVFU and CVFU Vertical Format Units along with the optional uses of Serial Data Bit 8 are not supported.
  • Printronix P6XX0 using older C1 controllers, which are primarily installed in Europe, are not supported.
  • The following Printronix derivative printers are not supported:
    • KPG Panda printers

Limitations
  • Forms length maximum of 24 inches.
  • Maximum forms width of 17 inches (including tear strips) or 16 inches (without tear strips).
  • Uses 15 to 100 pound (6.8 to 45.36 kg) stock, with a maximum thickness of 0.025 inches (0.0635 cm).
  • Maximum print line of 13.6 inches.
  • Friction feed paper handling is not supported.
  • Use of high speed (Draft mode) fonts using greater than 15 CPI for critical applications should be avoided without assuring readability of the application is satisfactory.
  • Processing of forms with black or dark colored backing, or forms with see-through plastic or cellophane covered openings or windows may give false End-of-Forms (EOF) signals. RPQ S02392 (factory-installed) or S02394 (field-installed) may be ordered to provide a modified EOF switch to handle these types of forms.
  • Downloaded characters are not supported in Proprinter, Epson, P-Series, P-Series XQ Variant or Printronix Serial Matrix emulations.
  • Due to the variation in carbonless forms type and age, readability of more than 4-part forms should be assured prior to using for critical applications.
  • Compatibility differences may exist when replacing or coexisting with older printers due to technology differences, product and application customization, and emulation differences.
  • The IBM coax/twinax feature will not support P-series or EVFU control codes coming from the host. As a result, the C/T option may not plug and play with some older applications running on an installed Printronix printer. In that case, the Multi-Platform Interface coax/twinax feature should be selected.
  • The coaxial portion of the IBM coax/twinax feature of the IBM 6400-014 is subject to the following limitations, and the following features are not supported:

    • Minimum dot matrix of 9 wide by 8 high
    • Minimum dot matrix of 4 or 7 wide by 8 high
    • Print lines greater than 198 characters
  • IBM 6400 vs 4234 IPDS Comparisons -- 4234 Emulation Differences
    • The 4234 emulation will not support Load Symbol Sets (LSS).
    • The 4234 emulation will use Courier for all Near Letter Quality (NLQ) mode printing, whereas 4234 NLQ mode was Gothic for 13.3, 16.7 and 18 CPI.
    • The dot sizes are different. Also, the 6400 has a single dot size vs three with the 4234. For bar code applications, some combinations of unit module width, wide-to-narrow ratio, and element height may affect read rates.
    • The 4234 emulation will report image and font resolution of 120 x 144 pel, compared to 144 x 144 pel in the 4234. This will cause images to change size in the vertical dimension.
    • Proportional Space Mode (PSM) is not the same. See Compatibility charts.
  • IBM 6400 vs 4234 IPDS Comparisons -- 6400 Deviations
    • The 6400 will report Loaded Font command set (LF2) in the Sense Type Module (STM), but will not support Load Symbol Set (LSS).

Printronix Emulations:

  • Overview

Printronix P-Series emulation is code that was developed especially for recent Printronix line matrix printer models. This ASCII emulation is similar to that available with the ASCII portion of the IBM 6408 and 6412 CTA models as well as the Printronix P3040A, P4280 and P9212 models.

Printronix P-Series XQ Variant emulates older Model P300 and P600 Printronix printers manufactured between 1974 and 1991. Printronix P-Series XQ Variant emulation provides Elongated and Gothic typefaces compatible with Printronix Model P300 and P600 printers.

Printronix Serial Matrix emulation is similar to that used in older Printronix serial matrix printers, and later made available in Printronix line matrix printers to emulate printers with moving print heads.

P-Series emulation has the following output control features:

    • Five modes for printing text:
      1. Near Letter Quality (NLQ)
      2. Data Processing (DP)
      3. High Speed (HS) Draft
      4. Optical Character Recognition Font A (OCR-A)
      5. Optical Character Recognition Font B (OCR-B)
    • Selectable forms length
    • Character attribute specification:
      1. Selectable pitch: normal, expanded and compressed
      2. Emphasized (shadow) printing
      3. Double strike (bold) printing
      4. Automatic underlining
      5. Superscript and subscript printing
      6. Double high printing
    • Resident multinational character sets
  • Graphics Formatting

There are two built-in graphics generators:

    1. Odd-Even Dot Plot Mode (P-Series, P-Series XQ Variant emulations)
    2. Bit-image graphics (Serial Matrix emulation).
  • Vertical Formatting (Slewing)

Rapid vertical paper movement is called slewing. A vertical format unit (VFU) is a program loaded into the printer that enables it to slew paper to preset locations on a page, such as a line on a pre-printed form.

On all Printronix line matrix printers, Line Feed (LF) commands and other commands that produce blank lines are accumulated and moved in one efficient paper motion. The VFUs are maintained for compatibility with earlier applications. Printronix emulations have a Printronix Electronic Vertical Format Unit (EVFU) and a vertical tab table. The EVFU is used with Printronix P-Series and Printronix P-Series XQ Variant emulations. The Vertical Tab Table is used with Printronix Serial Matrix emulation. Although it is not a "true" VFU, the Serial Matrix Vertical Tab Table provides the vertical forms control.

The Vertical Tab Table is always active and operational when the printer is in the Printronix Serial Matrix mode. The EVFU is available in Printronix P-Series and Printronix XQ Variant protocols and is enabled or disabled from the control panel.

Built-in Diagnostic Tools:

The following diagnostic tools are provided with the printer:

  • Comprehensive diagnostic self-tests permanently stored in the printer
  • Configuration printout
  • Test pattern printout
  • Data stream hex code printout

PC Parallel Interface:

The PC parallel interface is Centronics compatible and allows the printer to operate with controllers designed for buffered Centronics printers. The length of the data cable from the host computer to the printer must not exceed 15 feet (5 meters).

Note: Maximum cable length of six feet (two meters) is recommended for more reliable data transfer.

RS-232 Serial Interface:

The RS-232 Serial interface enables the printer to operate with bit serial devices compatible with an RS-232C controller. The input serial data transfer rate (in baud) is selectable from the printer's control panel. Baud rates of 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19.2K, 38.4K, 57.6K and 115.2K are available. The input format consists of a single start bit, 7 or 8 data bits, and one or two stop bits. The number of data bits is determined by printer configuration.

The data bits are interpreted with the least significant bit first. Parity checking is determined by printer configuration options selected from the operator panel.

The printer interface uses a first in/first out buffer. The asynchronous interface accepts data as it is provided by the host. The length of the data cable from the host computer to the printer must not exceed 50 feet (15 meters). The interface circuit characteristics are compatible with the Electronic Industry Association Specification EIA-232-D.

Dataproducts Parallel Interface:

The Dataproducts parallel interface allows the printer to operate with a 50 pin AMP Amplite HDH-20 data cable connector. The length of the data cable from the host computer to the printer must not exceed 40 feet (12 meters). The Dataproducts Adapter is orderable with Feature Code 4881.

IBM 6400-014 Coax/Twinax Multi-Platform Interface (#4831/4836) Software Support:

There are no identified software support requirements for the MPI feature. This feature is designed to allow the printer to print applications from host (coax or twinax) environments, such as the IBM 3270, IBM AS/400 and IBM System 3X compatible with older non-IBM printers such as Printronix and others.

When using this feature, the printer can be attached to both a host system (Coax or Twinax attach) and a LAN or PC connected via the Centronics parallel interface. The MPI interface monitors data at both ports, and will switch between ports (when no print job is in progress) at a user selectable period of 15 or 45 seconds.

FC 4840 - IGP (Printronix Emulation) PLANT ORDER ONLY

The IGP (Intelligent Graphics Processor) feature is a simple programming language for creating graphics in printers equipped with the IGP board. IGP Printronix emulation (also sometimes called PGL) creates on-line forms, bar codes, and has a variety of alphanumeric text-generation capabilities. These capabilities are detailed below:

  • ON-LINE FORM AND LABEL GENERATION - Makes it easy to create forms or labels with the "pre-printed" look. Graphics capabilities include boxes, vertical and horizontal lines with user-selectable thickness, logos, and special alphanumeric print features. Forms and graphic designs can be duplicated horizontally and vertically.
  • SELECTABLE BAR CODES - Provides the appropriate bar code using standard wide-to-narrow ratios. Bar codes available are:
    • Code 39 (also called Code 3 of 9)
    • Interleaved 2 of 5
    • UPC-A
    • UPC-E
    • MSI A through D
    • Code 128 Subset B and C
    • EAN-8
    • EAN-13
    • POSTNET

Note: Both UPC and EAN bar codes can also specify add-on data.

  • EXPANDED AND COMPRESSED CHARACTER PRINT - Alphanumeric height and width are controlled independently for a wide range of character sizes up to 113 times the standard character size (up to 9.9 inches wide and tall). Compressed print sizes of 12, 13, 15 and 17 characters per inch (CPI) are available.
  • ROTATED ALPHANUMERICS - Permits new concepts in font design. Normal, expanded and compressed character strings can be rotated 90 degrees clockwise, counterclockwise, or printed upside down.
  • LOGOS - created using alphanumeric commands and add a variety of print and shading features, for a "customized" appearance to forms, reports, and labels.
  • REVERSED PRINT - for text, logos and forms, permits highlighting and contrasting by 'printing' white characters on a dark background.
  • AUTOMATIC INCREMENT / DECREMENT CAPABILITY - allows batch form processing. You can identify individual numeric and bar code data fields, which includes automatic increment or decrement functions.

IGP is an emulation that allows you to print sophisticated graphics and bar codes. Depending on what the printer is doing, it is always in a particular Mode, which is transparent to the user.

When the printer is receiving text, or printing text, it is in Normal Mode. Any time the printer is on and is not processing IGP commands, it is in Normal Mode. When a Create Form command is issued, the printer moves from the Normal Mode to the Create Form Mode. During this phase, the user sends text, images, and bar code data to the IGP. All of this data is stored in memory. An End statement terminates the IGP data string and the printer returns to Normal Mode.

You can create as many forms as you wish and store them in your host. You can also save the forms in the emulation memory. All forms have file names. You may want to print the form, label it, and store it for future reference. Or, you may devise another method for easy retrieval. These forms can then be downloaded from your host to the printer. When you Execute a form, you can print it as many times as you wish. This saves time from downloading the form each time you want to print it.

The IGP - Printronix Emulation Programmers Reference Manual (S246-0151) is included with this feature and explains the Modes and Commands of IGP in detail.

Maximum: One per machine.

Note: Feature Codes 4840 and 4850 are mutually exclusive. You may choose only one.

Customer Setup: Yes, if ordered along with the base printer; it is factory installed. If ordered later as an MES, IBM Service must install the feature as FC 4845.

FC 4850 - Code V (Printronix Emulation) Plant Order Only

The Code V feature is the QMS(TM)-compatible Intelligent Graphics Processor software designated for the IBM 64XX family of impact line matrix printers. Code V emulates the QMS Code V Version II programming language to produce on-line forms, bar code, and supports many alphanumeric text-generation capabilities. Code V Printronix emulation (also sometimes called VGL) graphics processing features are detailed below:

  • ON-LINE FORM AND LABEL GENERATION - makes it easy to create forms or labels with the "pre-printed" look for each application. Code V Printronix emulation programs control all graphics functions, dramatically reducing host computer programming and processing time. Graphics capabilities include boxes, vertical and horizontal, solid and dashed lines with a variety of thicknesses, logos, and special alphanumeric print features. Forms and graphic designs can be duplicated horizontally and vertically.
  • VARIABLE BAR CODES - allows bar codes for your applications to print easily with standard and user-defined ratios in vertical and horizontal orientations. Available bar codes are:
    • Codabar
    • Code 39 (also called Code 3 of 9)
    • Code 128
    • Code 128-UCC with Subsets A, B and C
    • Interleaved 2 of 5
    • UPC-A
    • UPC-E
    • UPC Shipping
    • POSTNET
    • EAN-8
    • EAN-13
    • MSI

The IBARC bar code command prints bar codes in four orientations; horizontal, rotated 90, rotated 180, or rotated 270 degrees.

  • EXPANDED AND COMPRESSED PRINT - draws attention where needed. Alphanumeric height and width are controlled independently for a tremendous range of character sizes, up to 9.9 inches wide and tall. Five compressed print sizes are available - 12, 13.33, 15, 17.41 and 20 characters per inch (CPI); permitting up to 170 columns in an 8.5 inch printed area (20 CPI).
  • ROTATED ALPHANUMERICS - permits new concepts in form design. Normal, expanded, and compressed character strings can be rotated 90 degrees clockwise, counterclockwise, or printed upside down.
  • LOGOS - are easy to create using alphanumeric commands and a variety of print and shading features, for a "customized" appearance to forms, reports and labels. Additionally, the registered trademark (R), copyright (C), TUV, GS-Mark, UL, and CSA symbols are provided as standard designs. Custom symbols can also be defined.
  • REVERSED AND SHADED PRINT - permits highlighting and contrasting by "printing" white characters on a dark background, or white characters on a gray shaded background. Various levels or patterns of gray shading and reverse printing can be combined with the many other print features to create distinctive designs.
  • AUTOMATIC INCREMENT / DECREMENT CAPABILITY - Allows batch form processing. Individual numeric and bar code data fields can be identified and automatically incremented or decremented by any amount beginning from any specified number.
  • MULTINATIONAL CHARACTER SETS - Provides 32 sets; each 96 characters in length. This feature also allows you to create your own character sets using characters defined and stored in the font memory.

FC 4860 - IPDS - (Twinax Only) Plant Order Only

FC 4870 - IPDS - (Coax Only) Plant Order Only

Note: The following description applies to both feature codes.

Publication S246-0148, "6400 IPDS Programmer's Reference" is included as part of either of these features.

The IBM Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) allows print pages containing an unlimited mix of different types of data: high-quality text, images, vector graphics, and bar codes. You may send IPDS data to the 6400-04P when attached to the IBM AS/400, intelligent work stations, IBM 3270-family controllers, LANs and spooled systems. In some of these environments, you may create applications to directly control IPDS printers such as the 6400 with this feature. For more information about IPDS as a component of printing subsystems, refer to "Intelligent Printer Data Stream Reference," S544-3417.

Technical Description:

  • CAPABILITIES OF IPDS. An IBM 6400 Model 014 controlled by either of these IPDS features has a number of advantages over conventional printers. With IPDS you can:
    • Use the printer's all-points-addressable printing to print text, graphics, images, or bar codes at any point on a page.
    • Print text in a variety of type styles and switch fonts within a printed page.
    • Use both image and vector graphics to print line drawings, pie charts, bar charts, graphics, logos, tables, and signatures.
    • Combine text with image and graphics on the same page, creating what is known as a 'composite document'.
    • Electronically store and later print forms and letterheads that are always printed in the same predetermined type style.
    • Electronically store and later print text where the type style printed is the same as that used in the rest of the text.
    • Print any of 16 different kinds of bar code in many sizes and with a number of variations.
    • Print either portrait or landscape mode.
  • IPDS allows you to print a letter in one step. With conventional printing you must load letterhead paper into the printer, print the text of the letter and then manually sign the letter. With IPDS, the letterhead and signature may be temporarily stored in the printer memory, and then merged with the letter text to form the complete letter. Graphics such as line or bar charts, may also be used in the letter, creating a composite document.
  • OVERLAYS - are stored constructs (text, graphics, images and bar codes), often in complex configurations, with all the instructions needed to print. An overlay always prints in the type style used when it is stored, and can be positioned anywhere on the page. Overlays are useful for letterheads, forms, etc.
  • PAGE SEGMENTS - are similar to overlays except the construct is stored without specific instructions for type styles and position on the page. Page segments are printed in the type style in use at print time. You may place a page segment anywhere on the page.
  • IMAGES - are figures on the page created by explicitly specifying each dot in the figure. There is one bit of image data per dot, so a large quantity of data is needed to create an image. IM images are uncompressed raster data images. A raster pattern is composed of a series of dots arranged in scan lines.
  • GRAPHICS - are line drawings create from separate lines, arcs, and markers. With vector graphics, only control information such as the end points of a line are sent to the printer. This process allows the creation of complex figures with a minimum of data.
  • BAR CODE - is encoded information that is recognized by optical scanning devices. The printer can print the following bar code types in many sizes and with other variations, such as with or without human-readable characters.
    • 3 of 9 Alphanumeric (also called Code 39)
    • USS Codabar
    • EAN-8
    • EAN-13
    • EAN-13 with 2- and 5-digit supplementals
    • Interleaved 2 of 5
    • Industrial 2 of 5
    • Matrix 2 of 5
    • MSI
    • UPC Version A
    • UPC Version A with 2- and 5-digit supplementals
    • UPC Version E
    • UPC Version E with 2- and 5-digit supplementals
    • Code 128
    • USPS POSTNET

Maximum Number of Features: One

Note: You must choose either Coax or Twinax. Both cannot coexist at the same time.

Prerequisites: An IBM 6400-04P with the IBM coax/twinax FC 4830/4835.

Corequisites: None

Compatibility Conflicts: Both IPDS-twinax (FC 4860) and IPDS-coax (FC 4870) cannot be resident at the same time. Only one can be installed. Also, refer to the Compatibility tables in the Coax Twinax specify feature 4830. In addition, the Coax/Twinax Multi-Platform feature (#4831) cannot be used with either of these features.

Customer Setup: Yes, if ordered along with the base printer; it is factory installed. If ordered later as an MES, IBM Service must install this feature as FC 4865 or 4875.

However, see the Installability section for information on an optional CE Installation contract.

Limitations:

  • IBM 6400-04P vs IBM 4234 IPDS Comparisons - 4234 Emulation Differences
    • The 4234 emulation will not support Load Symbol Sets (LSS).
    • The 4234 emulation will use Courier for all Near Letter Quality (NLQ) mode printing, whereas the 4234 NLQ mode was Gothic for 13.3, 16.7 and 18 CPI.
  • The IBM 6400 vs IBM 4234 IPDS Comparisons - 6400 Deviations
    • The 6400 will report Loaded Font command set (LF2) in the Sense Type Module (STM), but will not support Load Symbol Set (LSS).
    • The 6400 will support Page Continuation Actions without highlighting.
    • The 6400 cannot detect Human Readable Integers (HRI) outside of the Bar Code Presentation space under all circumstances.

Ribbon life experienced by the user may vary significantly depending on the user's own quality criteria and on factors such as printer condition, machine settings and paper quality and bar code requirements. Label yield is dependent upon label format, bar code symbology, and other parameters. Label yield with high performance scanning equipment may exceed these yields.
