Infoprint 6500 family

The Infoprint 6500 family has models with maximum print speeds from 500 to 2,000 lpm, and with an array of features that can be used to customize the printer for many applications and attachments. The breadth of the Infoprint 6500 family offers common features across the range of printer speeds.

IBM Printer Management Utility

When ordered with one of the following LAN or wireless Ethernet interfaces (#4177, #5180, #4542, #4544, or #4545), the Infoprint 6500 natively supports the IBM Printer Management Utility (PMU). This utility provides a database from which the user can have real-time visibility to printer status and ribbon life for every Infoprint 6500 and 6700 installed on their network.

Using the database, a remote user can quickly create master configurations, and then download them to multiple printers simultaneously. If microcode updates are required, the PMU also enables new microcode to easily be downloaded to multiple printers. If a simple configuration change is required, or for problem determination, the PMU allows the use of a virtual operator panel, thereby providing the operator with complete control over the printer.

The Print Management Utility also provides proactive printer monitoring by immediately notifying the appropriate operators when assistance is required. At the moment an alert occurs, a message indicating the type of alert is sent via e-mail to the specific operator tasked with resolving that class of alert. For example, when a "ribbon low" alert is generated by a printer, an e-mail will be sent to the person responsible for installing new ribbons on the printer.

The IBM Printer Management Utility can be downloaded by going to:

https://www.printers.ibm.com
  1. Choose "Downloads and Drivers"
  2. Then choose Infoprint 6500

Intelligent Ribbon System and Ultra Capacity Ribbons

The customer replaceable Ultra Capacity 50M character ribbon, in conjunction with the capabilities of the printer and the Printer Management Utility, delivers the following unique benefits:

  • The ability for the operator to use a standard printer feature called Ribbonminder, which allows the operator to specify a desired ribbon life end point.
  • Helps to eliminate costly reprints and unacceptable output by taking advantage of the Infoprint 6500?s Intelligent Ribbon System, which enables the printer to stop printing and alert the appropriate operator when a new ribbon is needed, and then automatically detect when a new ribbon is installed, and reset Ribbonminder accordingly.
  • The Infoprint 6500 Ultra Capacity 50 Million character ribbon is optimized for report printing, text printing, bar code label printing, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) printing.

EuroReady

The Infoprint 6500 Models v5P, v05, v1P, v10, v15, and v20 are EuroReady and can print the euro symbol. The host software must be capable of sending the correct euro symbol information to the printer.

Operational commonality

You can operate the Infoprint 6500 Models v5P, v05, v1P, v10, v15, and v20 in much the same way as the previous IBM 6400 models. These models demonstrate a commonality in areas such as loading and unloading of forms, and the availability of coax, twinax, Ethernet, Code V, IGP, IPDS, Proprinter III XL, Epson FX 1050, Printronix P-Series, and Printronix P-Series XQ Variant emulations.

Black Back Forms Sensor (#4640, 4641)

This feature provides a forms sensor that is capable of detecting the end-of-forms (EOF) condition for black-backed forms. It may also be used to run forms with binder holes in the body of the form. Because of the variation in the size of binder holes, testing is recommended to verify that the sensor accommodates the size of the binder holes correctly.

The standard EOF sensor is modified such that the EOF optical sensor senses the forward travel of the forms motion arm at EOF, instead of directly sensing the white or light paper. The modified EOF sensor is slightly less precise than the standard sensor, as it is affected by forms tension and the mechanical nature of the forms motion arm.

Limitations
  • Maximum forms length is 24 inches.
  • Maximum forms width is 17 inches (including tear strips) or 16 inches (without tear strips).

Note:If the rear exit of the pedestal models is used, there is a maximum forms width of 16 inches, including tear strips.

  • 15-pound (56 grams/square meter or 6.8 kg) to 100-pound cardstock (163 grams per square meter or 45.36 kg) stock can be used, with a maximum thickness of 0.025 inches (0.0635 cm).
  • Maximum print line is 13.6 inches.
  • Friction feed paper handling is not supported.
  • Checking the readability of the application is necessary when using high speed (draft mode) fonts requiring greater than 15 cpi for critical applications.
  • Processing of forms with black or dark-colored backing, or forms with see-through plastic or cellophane-covered openings or windows, may give false end-of-forms (EOF) signals.
  • Downloaded characters are not supported in Proprinter, Epson, pSeries, pSeries XQ Variant, or Printronix Serial Matrix emulations.
  • Due to the variation in carbonless forms' type and age, readability of more than 4-part forms should be assured before using for critical applications.
  • Compatibility differences may exist when replacing or coexisting with older printers due to technology differences, product and application customization, and emulation differences.
  • The coaxial portion of the IBM coax/twinax feature of the IBM Infoprint 6500 is subject to the following limitations, and the following features are not supported:
    • Minimum dot matrix of 9 wide by 8 high.
    • Minimum dot matrix of 4 or 7 wide by 8 high.
    • IBM 3287 Models 1C and 2C.
    • Programmed symbols 2 and 4, 190 character downloadable fonts. For SCS/DSC/DSE mode only.
    • Data analysis = APL feature.

    • Minimum dot matrix of 4 or 7 wide by 8 high
    • Print lines greater than 198 characters
  • Infoprint 6500 vs 4234 IPDS Comparisons -- 4234 Emulation Differences:
    • The 4234 emulation will not support Load Symbol Sets (LSS).
    • The 4234 emulation will use Courier for all Near Letter Quality (NLQ) mode printing, whereas 4234 NLQ mode was Gothic for 13.3, 16.7 and 18 cpi.
    • The dot sizes are different. Also, the 6500 has a single dot size versus three with the 4234. For bar code applications, some combinations of unit module width, wide-to-narrow ratio, and element height may affect read rates.
    • The 4234 emulation will report image and font resolution of 120 x 144 pel, compared to 144 x 144 pel in the 4234. This will cause images to change size in the vertical dimension.
    • Proportional Space Mode (PSM) is not the same.
  • Infoprint 6500 vs 4234 IPDS Comparisons -- 6500 Deviations
    • The 6500 will report Loaded Font command set (LF2) in the Sense Type Module (STM), but will not support Load Symbol Set (LSS).
    • The 6500 will support Page Continuation Actions (PCA) without highlighting.
    • The 6500 cannot detect Human-readable Interpretations (HRI) outside of the Bar Code Presentation space under all circumstances.

(#4895) Power Stacker - Initial Order Only

This feature provides an optional power stacker for the IBM 6500 Models v10, v15 and v20. There is no Power Stacker available for the Model v0top The power stacker cannot be ordered as an MES, and installed in the field. It can only be ordered on an initial order for a new printer.

The stacker is fully enclosed within the printer cabinet.

During printing, a vertically movable paper guide stacks the printed output. Non-marking pinch rollers allow for varying paper thickness and provides constant tension on the paper. The pinch rollers are conducive to reducing the electrostatic charge buildup on the paper.

Two infrared beams sense the paper height and cause the frame position to be controlled as the paper height in-creases. A paper motion detector mounted at the pinch roller station monitors proper paper movement. If a jam occurs in the stacker, the motion detector senses it and stops the printer.

There is a stacker control panel mounted inside the rear of the printer. The operator sets up the stacker operation from the stacker control panel. Two LEDs indicate power on and on-line conditions. Push buttons are provided for on/off line, form feed, stacker up and stacker down.

The stacker operates by raising and lowering the stacking mechanism to adjust to the stack height.

(#4640) Black Back Forms Sensor - Initial (#4641) Black Back Forms Sensor - MES

This feature provides a forms sensor which is capable of detecting the end-of-forms (EOF) condition for Black-Backed Forms.

(#4542) Wireless Ethernet 10/100BaseT NIC Adapter - Initial Order (#4544) Wireless Cabinet Ethernet 10/100BaseT NIC Adapter - MES (#4545) Wireless Pedestal Ethernet 10/100BaseT NIC Adapter - MES

The Wireless Ethernet 10/100BaseT NIC Adapter is an internal adapter to connect the printer to an Ethernet wireless network using IPDS, TCP/IP, NetBIOS TCP/IP, and IPX. This Network Interface Card (NIC) is an internal adapter and does not use the parallel port.

When the IPDS Feature (FN 4861, 7866) is installed with these features, the Wireless Ethernet 10/100 BaseT NIC can be used for IPDS.

These adapters provide the capability to provide printer status information via a Web page when the printer's IP address is supplied to a standard Web browser. This is in addition to the function provided by the IBM Printer Management Utility.

Wireless operation requires that the customer obtain a PCMCIA radio card such as the Symbol LA-4121-1100-US, or the Cisco AIR-LMC352, or the equivalent.

The wireless antenna is included with these features.
