The IBM 5101 Infoprint 5000 features leading-edge ink jet Drop-on-Demand technology for full-process color using water-based cyan, magenta, yellow, and black pigment inks. These inks are highly water-and light-resistant. The Infoprint 5000 is designed to print PDF Level 1.6 and PostScript Level 3. These simplex and duplex models are ideal for high-volume color printing and provide color production printing at up to 916 letter-size (8.5 x 11 inch) ipm or 862 A4 (11.69 x 8.27 inch) ipm for two-up duplex applications.(1)

Note: (1) Exact speed varies depending on document complexity, system configuration, software application, driver, and printer state.

Note: The Infoprint 5000 (Machine Type 5101) is not available in Latin America.

Model Abstract 5101-CS1

The IBM 5101 Infoprint 5000 Model CS1 is a high speed, high quality simplex printer.

Model Abstract 5101-CD1

The IBM 5101 Infoprint 5000 Model CD1 is the first engine of the CD1/2 high speed duplex printing system. Model CD1 does not contain its own control unit and therfore must always be used in conjunction with Model CD2.

Model Abstract 5101-CD2

The Infoprint 5000 Model CD2 is the second engine of the CD1/2 high speed duplex printing system. Model CD2 contains the IBM Control Unit and can be used to print in simplex (without the CD1) or in dual simplex or duplex by mating with the CD1.

The IBM Infoprint 5000 Color Printing System offers:

  • Full-color continuous forms, high-volume printer
  • Print speeds up to 209.9 linear feet-per-minute (up to 916 impressions-per-minute (ipm) (1) in 2-up duplex 8.5-x 11-inch portrait) or 64 linear meters-per-minute (up to 862 ipm in 2-up duplex A4 portrait)
  • Powerful IBM multi-computer printer controller that drives an Adobe Postscript RIP
  • Superior image quality (2 bits per spot, multiple drop sizes)
  • Leading edge ink jet technology
  • Water-based pigment inks designed to resist fading and smearing
  • Media widths of 6.5 inches (165.1 mm) to 20.5 inches (520.7 mm)

Note: (1) Exact speed varies depending on document complexity, system configuration, software application, driver, and printer state.

The Infoprint 5000 family of printers are designed for very high-throughput color production printing environments. The Infoprint 5000 is targeted at printing environments where good print quality, and superior reliability at high printing speed are critical factors. These printers feature a 19.96-inch (507 mm) print width, and tractorless operation.

Wide Format

The maximum print width of the Infoprint 5000 family is 19.96 inches (507 mm).

CD1/2 Duplex 720 x 360 916 862

Note: (2) Resolution is in dpi (dots-per-inch).

Note: (3) ipm is impressions-per-minute

Tractorless (Pinless) Paper Drive

The Infoprint 5000 uses an integrated tractorless paper drive. The tractorless paper drive allows either pinless or pinned paper to be used.

Note: Some pre- and post-processing devices require the use of pinned paper.

Pre- and Post-Processing Devices

Pre- and Post-Processing equipment that support a tight web is required for the Infoprint 5000. A type 1 interface modified for the Infoprint 5000 is used to attach pre- and post-processing devices.

Duplex Printing

The Infoprint 5000 tandem duplex system consists of two printers (the CD1 with the CD2) that work together to print on both sides of the media.

Duplex printing is achieved by arranging the two printers in series, separated by the "I" or "L" Turnbar so that the continuous forms exiting from the first printer go through a Turnbar that turns the forms over (inverts them) before entering the second printer. The first printer in the paper path prints one side of a form; the second printer in the paper path prints the other side of the form.

The following table summarizes the Turnbars required for the Infoprint 5000 Models CD1/2 duplex configurations.

 Required
Configuration Turnbar
----------------- -------------------------
"I" (In-Line) Turnbar "I" (#9410, 4410)

"L" (Left-Angle) Turnbar "L" (#9420, 4420)

Web Cleaner (#9460, 9461 or 9462)

A web cleaner is included with the Infoprint 5000. The purpose of this unit is to neutralize static and to clean paper dust and paper chads from the continuous form media prior to the media entering the printer.

The web cleaner with the correct voltage must be specified when the printer is ordered. The web cleaner contains a universal attachment kit to allow its attachment to an unwinder and is powered separately from the printer.

Hardware Requirements

Attachment Features

An integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet Gigabit TCP/IP adapter is included with the Infoprint 5000 Models CS1 and CD2.

Software Requirements

The Infoprint 5000 Models CS1, CD1, and CD2 are designed to print PDF Level 1.6 and PostScript Level 3 print jobs. The printer controller uses Microsoft Shared Folders as "hot folders" for receipt of print jobs. From a print submission workstation or server, users will map the hot folder to their local system and copy files to it to get jobs into the printer. Hot folders may be configured with unique job attributes. The printer features a simple 2-up function suitable for slit-merge finishing applications. Any other changes to document format and layout may require additional processing with imposition software before a file is submitted for printing.

Although an IBM print server is not required to print PostScript Level 3 and PDF Level 1.6 jobs on the Infoprint 5000, it is possible to use this printer with IBM Infoprint ProcessDirector, IBM Infoprint Manager for AIX, or IBM Infoprint Manager for Windows. If you run the printer with one of these print servers, the following software levels are required:
