The IBM Infoprint 4000 family of printing systems is designed to helph you meet your high-volume and high-throughput production and print-on-demand printing needs, providing improved productivity, reliability, flexibility, and investment protection.

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 simplex printing systems are designed for statement printing. You can use the Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 to produce traditional statements, invoices, policies, letters, and other critical customer communications.

Model Abstract 4000-IS1

The IBM Infoprint 4000 Model IS1 is a high-production, continuous forms, all-points-addressable simplex printing system that offers switchable (operator selectable) 240/300 dpi resolution with a throughput speed of up to 354 impressions-per-minute (IPM). These speeds are quoted as 2-up, side-by-side 8.5 x 11-inch portrait. Respective throughputs for European format A4 paper sizes are up to 333 IPM.

Model Abstract 4000-IS2

The IBM Infoprint 4000 Model IS2 is a high-speed, high-production, continuous forms, all-points-addressable simplex printing system that offers switchable (operator selectable) 240/300 dpi resolution with a throughput speed of up to 501 impressions-per-minute (IPM). These speeds are quoted as 2-up, side-by-side 8.5 x 11-inch portrait. Respective throughputs for European format A4 paper sizes are up to 472 IPM.

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 are controlled by an Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU) which enables resolution switching, host-managed paper-jam recovery through customer's post-processing equipment, and supports various function and enhancement features.

Description

The IBM Infoprint 4000 model IS1 and Model IS2 are high-speed, high-production, continuous-forms, all-points-addressable simplex laser printers that offer 240/300 dpi switchable resolution.

The Infoprint 4000 is based on the industry leading 3900 family and IBM's state-of-the-art Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU). The IBM Infoprint 4000 is equipped with the next generation AFCCU which enables resolution switching from 240 dpi to 300 dpi and vice-versa. In addition, the new AFCCU enables host managed paper jam recovery through the customer's post-processing equipment, new operator function enabling flexibility, up to 512MB of performance enabling memory, and support for adding toner while the printer is in operation.

Customers in the banking, communications, insurance, utilities, and other industries who send statements, bills, policies, and other forms of communications to their customers can utilize the IBM Infoprint 4000 to maximize the productivity of their printing operations. With the capability and flexibility of receiving either 240 dpi or 300 dpi datastreams and printing them on a single printer, customers can have the option of reducing overall printing costs by eliminating redundant printers that up to now were necessary to maintain the capability and options of printing either 240 or 300 dpi datastreams.

Productivity Tracking Feature(#4565)

The Productivity Tracking feature is designed to enhance the information available to customers on the operation of IBM Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100 printers. Information can be available by printer, by operator, or by job.

This feature enables the printer so that it can send production data to a LAN-attached Windows Server. The Windows Server must have the Infoprint Productivity Suite Program Product (5639-AA8), with the Productivity Tracking Feature, installed so that it can receive production data sent by the printer control unit.

The printer sends operational data to the server so that a database of operational data can be built. Infoprint Productivity Suite uses the DB2 Universal Database Express Edition V8.1 (included with Infoprint Productivity Suite) to store the data from the printers in the operations database, which can be accessed by customer-specific applications.

Sample report templates are included with the Infoprint Productivity Suite. These templates can be used by clients with Microsoft Excel to provide the basic tools needed to organize, analyze, and display the operational data.

The sample graphs can be selected based on time frame, operator, printer, and shifts, and will include graphs such as:

  • Percentage of time printing
  • Estimated feet printed
  • Estimated toner changes
  • Error frequency
  • Estimated printed foot count per job

The Infoprint Productivity Suite: Productivity Tracking feature also provides an activity logging capability. This feature can log activities such as:

  • Loaded forms
  • Aligned forms
  • Added/checked supplies
  • Cleared jam
  • Serviced printer
  • Cleaned printer
  • Cleared stacker
  • Checked print quality
  • Cleared error
  • Waited for printer to warm up
  • Waited for printer to restart

The list of activities can be customized and additional activities can be defined. Additional information is in the Program Product (5639-AA8) description.

These templates can also be used by the customer to design customized graphs.

Specific and customized reports and analysis software is the responsibility of the customer. IBM PSD Professional Services can provide this capability along with installation support.

The Productivity Tracking hardware feature (#4565) must be ordered for each Infoprint 4000 or Infoprint 4100 printer control unit that is to send data to the production database. The supported printers include:

  • Infoprint 4000 Models IS1, IS2, ID2, ID4, ID6, IR2 and IR4
  • Infoprint 4100 Models HS1, HS2, HS3, PS1, PD2, HD2, HD4, HD6

This feature is not supported by PSF/VM or PSF/VSE and cannot be used with these host systems.

64-bit Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU)

The 64-bit AFCCU processors provide industry-leading performance. You can take advantage of this performance with the Infoprint 4000 Models IS1, IS2, ID2, ID4, and ID6 since they now come standard with the 64-bit AFCCU p615.

64-bit AFCCU p615 1-Way (#9240, #4240)

The 64-bit AFCCU p615 comes with a single IBM POWER4 processor running at 1.2 GHz with 1 GB of memory and a single 36.4 GB hard drive. This processor is standard on new shipments, at no charge (#9240), and is available as an MES upgrade on installed models, for a charge (#4240).

These processors replace the AFCCU Function Performance Enhancement - PCI Processor (#4445 and #9945).

Many features on the Infoprint 4000 Models IS1, IS2, ID2, ID4, and ID6 require a PCI-based processor. These processors (#9240 and 4240) satisfy the same PCI Processor prerequisite requirement provided today by FN 9945 or 4445, except for the Attachment adapters (#4110, #4131, #4161, #4165, #4172, #4182, #4191). Other features on the Infoprint 4000 Models IS1, IS2, ID2, ID4, and ID6 that currently have FN 9945 or 4445 as a prerequisite can be installed with these processors.

Universal PCI and PCI-X attachment features

PCI-X is an evolutionary upgrade to PCI, the standard I/O technology in wide use today. PCI-X technology significantly increases the bus capacity of the conventional PCI bus bandwidth. PCI-X supports high-bandwidth applications with enhanced performance.

The following configuration rules apply to these adapters with the 64-bit p615 processor AFCCU:

  • Maximum of two adapters per AFCCU are allowed since there are two slots in the processor for adapter cards.
  • Maximum of one Long Wave or Short Wave Ficon adapter (#9675, 9676, 6475, 6476)
  • Maximum of one Token-Ring (#9980, 4121)
  • Maximun of two Ethernet SX and Ethernet TX in any combination (plus the integrated 10/100 adapter)
  • Maximum of two S/370 Parallel Channel (#9610, 6410), or ESCON (#9631, 6431)

With an initial order, one adapter (#9610, 9631, 9672, 9675, 9676, 9682, or 9980) can be ordered at no charge.

Integrated 10/100BaseT Ethernet Port in Controller

A 10/100BaseT Ethernet port, integrated into the control unit, is standard in the processors. This Ethernet port can be used for functions such as print data, SNMP, and such features as "Infoprint Manager Operations on the AFCCU" for true two-way communication between an Infoprint Manager server and the AFCCU.

If other Ethernet attachments are ordered, such as a Gigabit Ethernet TX feature, only one of these Ethernet ports can be enabled at one time for the purpose of receiving print data. However, the other port can be used for other functions such as SNMP.

Currently Installed Adapters

Existing attachment features will still be available for customers who wish to add attachment features to presently installed 32-bit AFCCUs.

The Token-Ring LAN attachment is still available for plant installation (#9980) and MES (#4121), and is supported by the 64-bit processors (#9240, #4240). Token Ring is the only existing adapter that is supported on the 64-bit processors.

Other existing adapters are not supported on the 64-bit processors.

No FDDI adapter is supported on the 64-bit processors.

Converter and Cable Features

Cable and converter features are available to allow you to connect Infoprint 4000 attachment features to a wide variety of networks and servers.

With the availability of these features, you now have a wide variety of cable and converter features to choose from depending upon the configuration of your servers and network.

Attachment cable features for 64-bit p615 processors

The following tables summarize the types of connectors used by the various PCI attachment features, cables, and connector cables on the Infoprint 4000 when the 64-bit AFCCU p615 processors (#9240 or #4240) are installed.

Customers must supply cables when any of the attachment features shown in Table CAB-1 are used. Customers can obtain cables from third party vendors or order cables from IBM.

Each installation requires custom planning for attachment cabling. Often the existing cables and cable connectors dictate the type of connectors that are required for a new attachment.

There are two types of connectors, often called the receiving connector and the standard connector. A standard connector plugs into a receiving connector of the same type (for example, LC to LC (R) or MT-RJ to MT-RJ (R)).

Table CAB-1 shows the type of connector and type of cable required by each of the attachment features (#6431, #6472, #6475, #6476, #6482, #9631, #9672, #9675, #9676, and #9682).

Prior to these attachments, IBM supplied cables for selected attachments.

Steps in selecting cable and/or connector cable features:

  1. Table CAB-1 lists the attachment cards and connectors. Determine what cables (for example, multi-mode, single-mode) and connectors (for example, LC, MT-RJ) are required for the attachment features (for example, 9682, 9672) that are being ordered.
  2. Choose the appropriate cable from Table CAB-2.

Table CAB-3 shows connector cables available if no cable provides the required connectors.

Table CAB-4 shows the connector types used on some printer attachments that have to be replaced.

When replacing printers or adding the attachment adapters in Table CAB-1 to an existing printer, it may be desirable to use existing cabling. When the facility cable connectors do not match the connectors on the attachment feature, cable converters (sometimes called patch cables) can be used to bridge between different type connectors.

The cable converters shown in Table CAB-3 may be ordered with the attachment feature to convert the supplied connector to another common connector type.

These converters are commonly plugged onto the end of a longer cable to adapt the connector type of the cable to the connector type of the attachment feature. These optional converters are all 2 meters (6 feet) in length.

For example, if a customer has ESCON (#9970 or #4131) installed and is replacing this with ESCON (#9631 or #6431), the above tables show that the original ESCON (#9970, #4131) uses an ESCON (R) type connector. From Table CAB-1, the new ESCON (#9631, #6431) uses an MT-RJ (R) connector.

Thus, the converter cable 7401, MT-RJ to ESCON (R), can be used with the existing cabling and the new ESCON attachment.

Examples of the use of Table CAB-5 follow:

  • To order a 62.5 um multi-mode cable that requires an LC connector at one end and an LC connector at the other end and is 31 meters long, order #7503.

    This cable could be used between an adapter that has an LC (R) connector and facility cabling with an LC (R) connector.

  • To order a 62.5 um multi-mode cable that requires an LC connector at one end and an SC connector at the other end and is 33 meters long, order #7402 and #7504.

    This cable could be used between an adapter that has an LC (R) connector and facility cable with an SC (R) connector.

  • To order a 62.5 um multi-mode cable that requires an LC connector at one end and an ESCON connector at the other end and is 33 meters long, order #7404 and #7505.

    This cable could be used between an adapter that has an LC (R) connector and facility cable with an ESCON (R) connector.

Blue and Green Customer Changeable Developers for the Infoprint 4000 and 4100 Families of Printers:

These features add the ability to use the Infoprint 4000 or 4100's Customer Changeable Developer (CCD) to print two types of applications on duplex printers:

  • Simplex applications with black toner plus one hi-lite color (1)
  • Duplex applications with the reverse side printed in an opposing color.

Statements can now have important information printed in a hi-lite color such as blue on the front of the page or have "Terms and Conditions" printed on the reverse in a selected color. This ability provides the following benefits:

  • Changing from printing black - black duplex applications to printing simplex jobs with black and a hi-lite color only requires the operator to change the Customer Changeable Developer (CCD).
  • Decrease the overall cost of printing by reducing the need for the costly purchasing and warehousing of pre-printed forms.
  • Add impact to your statements by highlighting important information in color.
  • Reduce downtime associated with changing from one pre-printed form to another.

(1) The ability to print simplex jobs with a hi-lite color on Infoprint 4000 Models ID5/6 will be available September 27, 2002. This application ability for the Infoprint 4000 Models ID1/2 and ID3/4 will be available November 22, 2002 as a microcode update. This microcode update is available free of charge to customers who have purchased one of these Color CCD options. Please contact your local CE to install IBM Infoprint 4000 and 4100 microcode Version 11.4 or greater to enable this function after November 22, 2002.

Additional Developer Carts

A developer cart is needed anytime a customer wishes to switch from one CCD to another. (For instance, when switching from printing with normal black toner to printing checks with MICR). A developer cart is automatically shipped with each 'Additional CCD' feature that is ordered. None of the 9xxx CCD factory specify feature codes ship with a developer cart. If an Additional CCD is ordered, an Additional Developer Cart (feature code 4440 for both Infoprint 4000 and 4100 printers) must also be ordered. For example, if feature code 9470 - CCD with Black Toner - Initial is specified on a new machine, and FC 4481 (Additional CCD with MICR Toner) is also ordered for the same machine, FC 4440 must be specified. This will result in a total of two developer carts being shipped. (1x FC 4440 plus one developer cart included in FC 4481).

The Color Toner CCD features have the following limitations:

  • Auto - Align is only available when the Color CCD is located in the second engine of a duplex system
  • The Enhanced Operator Console (feature code 9450/4450) is required.
  • Data verification between black and color data is not available in simplex applications. (similar to Side 1 / Side 2 data verification in black duplex applications) IBM does not recommend printing sensitive customer data in color toner while running simplex applications.
  • Although it is possible to print both 1-D and 2-D barcodes with color toner, not all barcode scanners and readers will be able to properly decode a color barcode. For this reason, it is not recommended to print bar codes with color toner.
  • CCDs are not interchangeable between different printer engines or models. A CCD is dedicated to one serial numbered printer engine. Additional CCDs can be ordered to print other color or MICR applications.
  • Once a CCD is loaded with one color toner, it can not be changed to another type of toner.
  • Tractorless (pinless) mode is only supported for duplex applications when the color CCD is located in engine 2. Simplex applications with a hi-lite color are not supported in pinless mode.
  • Custom colors are not available.
  • The AFCCU cannot detect which, if any color CCDs are installed. It is the operators responsibility to determine if the CCD installed matches the application being run.
  • Infoprint Fidelity Manager (FC 4832 or 4833) is not supported.

Product/Feature Overview

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 are high-speed continuous form printers with the following characteristics and maximum throughput speeds:

  • IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1: 354 Impressions-per-minute (IPM) (2-up, 8.5"x11", side-by-side) and 333 IPM A4 available in 240/300 dpi customer switchable resolution.
  • Installed 3900-0W1s may be upgraded to the new IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 Advanced Production Printer.
  • IBM Infoprint 4000 IS2: 501 Impressions-per-minute (IPM) (2-up, 8.5" x 11", side-by-side) and 472 IPM A4 available in 240/300 dpi customer switchable resolution.
  • Installed Infoprint 4000 IS1s, and 3900-0W1s with feature code 4290 or 4291 installed, may be upgraded to the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS2 Advanced Production Printer.

The print width is 17 inches (432 mm) and overall maximum paper forms width is 18 inches (457 mm).

The Infoprint Hi-Lite Color Model HC2 attaches to the Infoprint 4000 IS1 and Infoprint 4000 IS2.

Pre-post Processing Device

Print Quality

The IBM Infoprint 4000 family has IBM's exclusive Print Quality Enhancement (PQE) which consists of edge smoothing, fine fidelity protection, and boldness control.

Edge smoothing is the reduction of the "stair-stepping" appearance of diagonal lines. Edge smoothing is accomplished similar to that done on the IBM 3825, 3828, 3829, and 3835-002 Advanced Function Printers, and the IBM 3900s with PQE.

Fine fidelity protection refers to the protection of fine details in the print, consisting primarily of avoiding the fill-in of single-pel white areas while allowing the solid areas to be developed. It also includes the extra exposure of single-pel features. This is of greatest benefit in the reproduction of font serifs and the preservation of the details of narrow intersections of lines.

Boldness control allows control over print boldness that is independent of the settings of machine parameters; thus, the parameters can be adjusted to compensate for other changing conditions within a printer without affecting the boldness. This allows for bolder-looking print without using extra toner and for darker solid areas without filling in the fine white details.

Paper Handling

  • Input Continuous Forms

    The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Advanced Production Printers have a paper supply capacity of 16 inches (406 mm) of fanfold paper.

    Installing special feature code 4710 enables the attachment of the customer's choice of several available high capacity roll feed devices that will enable the customer to fully utilize the high-productivity capabilities of the IBM Infoprint 4000 family. Such roll feed input devices enable continuous printing of several hours between paper loading.

    There is a standard splicing station to minimize waste and increase operator efficiency.

  • Output Continuous Forms

    The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Advanced Production Printer is provided with a stacker with a maximum paper capacity of up to 14 inches (356 mm) in height. The actual height may be operator adjusted to limit the weight of the output stack of paper. The stacker can stack paper with lengths between 7 and 14 inches (178 and 356 mm).

    The ability to attach post-processing equipment (feature codes 4710 and 4720) allows additional input and output capabilities.

The ability to attach pre-post processing equipment (features #4710 and #4720) allows additional input and output capabilities.

Paper Sizes

Width: 8 to 18 inches (203 to 457 mm) (continuously variable).
The maximum print width is 17 inches (432 mm).


Length: 7- to 14-inch (178- to 356-mm) lengths (in 1/3- and 1/2-inch
increments) are supported by the standard stacker.

Lengths between 14 and 17 inches (432 mm) may be printed but cannot be stacked with the standard stacker. Feature code 4710 must be installed to disable the standard stacker when printing this form length, and suitable post-processing equipment is recommended.

A feature is available that extends the printing length to 28 inches. This feature may require additional memory.

Note: Lengths less than 7 inches (178 mm) are folded in multiples by the forms supplier and the stacker. (For example, forms 3.5 inches in length may be folded every 7 inches.)

Paper Weights

Paper weights between 16 and 42 pound (60 and 162 g/m2) bond are supported by the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1.

Paper weights between 16 and 28 pound (60 and 160 g/m2) bond are supported by the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS2.

Note: Paper weights above 107 g/m2 require special feature #4930 - (Heavyweight Paper Support) to be installed.

Paper Types

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Advanced Production Printers can print on normal fanfold paper, roll-feed paper, preprinted forms, and some label stock.

Certain applications, for example label printing, may cause excessive wear or premature failure of some components of the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Advanced Production Printers. In these situations, a customer with maintenance provided under the IBM Customer Agreement and the Attachment for Rental of IBM Machines may be liable for increased maintenance charges.

OCR and Bar Codes

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Advanced Production Printers can be used to print Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and bar code documents. The AFCCU supports Bar Code Object Content Architecture (BCOCA), which enables the printing of bar codes without special bar code fonts. The OCR and bar code produced by the IBM Infoprint 4000 Advanced Production Printer is intended to meet OCR and bar code printing standards. However, because of the variability of OCR readers and bar code scanners, IBM advises that customers evaluate the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 OCR and bar code output in their application environment. The IBM Infoprint 4000 Advanced Production Printer supports Postal Bar Codes (requires local certification by USPS). Refer to the "Forms Design Reference for Continuous Forms Advanced Function Printers" (G544-3921) for more detailed OCR and bar code information.

AFCCU Description/Functions

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Advanced Production Printer control units consist of the newest and most powerful RISC processor plus a Mechanism Interface Card (MIC). The MIC connects to the print engine, the operator panel, and the pre/post-processing interfaces. The MIC is connected to the RS/6000 processor via Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) cables. The host attachment connects to the RISC processor as does the color XGA with touch panel operator console.

Available host adapters include S/370 parallel channel and ESCON fiber-optic serial channel, Token-Ring (TCP/IP), 10/100 BaseT Ethernet (TCP/IP), and FDDI (TCP/IP).

The operator console consists of an IBM color monitor and a touch screen input device. The operator interface is based on XWindows and Motif. Motif is a set of interface standards set forth by the Open Software Foundation (OSF). These standards are supported by IBM.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Support

The Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2, like the other Infoprint 4000 and 3000 printers, support the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Management Information Base (MIB) for printers (RFC 1759). All mandatory Groups in the Printer MIB and required portions on MIB II (RFC 1213) and the Host Resources MIB (RFC 1514) are supported.

SNMP is used by IBM's Infoprint Workflow offering, and other industry standard system management tools, to monitor printers and provide information on printer status.

Some examples of the printer status and information that can be monitored using SNMP are:

On-line/Off-line, idle/printing, errors (SRCs: like out of toner, paper jam, output stacker full, out of paper), printer configuration, capacity, and number of pages printed.

SNMP can be used to either query printer status from a remote console or to alert a user of a given status at a remote console.

Select Medium Modifications (SMM)

IPDS supports a command, Select Medium Modifications (SMM), which in conjunction with the AFCCU and the MIC, selects one or more actions or modifications to be taken or inhibited on the current sheet of physical media (paper) being processed by post-processing equipment. (Ref. Data Stream and Object Architectures, IPDS Reference S544-3417-04 or "AFP Printer Information" G544-3290-04, Chapter 16.)

The SMM command is used to invoke processing options through the Advanced Function Post-processing Interface (special feature 4720). SMM support is not available on all PSF platforms.

Page Positioning Function

PSF for MVS 2.2.0 with APAR OW03243 and PSF for VSE 2.2.1 with APAR DY43519 provide new printer media handling support to facilitate printing output that places one, two, three, or four pages on a single printer form or sheet of paper. Page Positioning is activated by using the N_UP keyword in a form definition. The IBM Infoprint 4000 family includes the following additional capabilities:

  • On a given sheet, individual pages can be placed at any position the sheet, in any orientation, and in any size that will fit on the sheet.
  • Overlays can be placed relative to any partition origin, with or without variable page data from the application program.
  • Different overlays can be specified for each page.
  • Different offsets can be specified for each page.
  • Different rotations can be specified for each page.
  • Form ejection can be specified to eject to a new partition or a new sheet.

PPFA/370 will be also support the Page Positioning functions with the application of APAR PN54401.

Cut Sheet Emulation

A special case of page positioning, Cut-Sheet Emulation (CSE), can be set at the 4000 control panel. When the CSE option is set, jobs designed for printing on a cut-sheet printer will automatically print 2-up with no change to the AFP form definition for the job. Logically, the 4000 will split each sheet of paper in half, parallel to the tractors, and treat each half as a separate sheet of paper. It is a customer responsibility to ensure that the 4000 is loaded with paper that is wide enough to accommodate 2 application pages side by side.

4000 CSE options allow a choice of different page arrangements to accommodate different post-processing requirements. Pages can be placed sequentially from left to right, or right to left, and printed either right-side-up or upside-down. The customer can combine these options to accommodate specific post-processing requirements for each printer.

When the CSE option is set, all jobs sent to the printer will print 2-up side-by-side unless:

  • N_UP is specified in the form definition. If so, the N_UP definition will be honored and CSE will not be used.
  • The PSF print driver enables page size verification and disables CSE for pages that will not fit 2-up.

    CSE requires support in PSF for enablement. The 4000 console option for CSE will have no effect unless the printer is driven by a PSF that is enable for CSE. CSE support is available via APAR 0W19103 to PSF/MVS 2.2. This support includes a page-size verification option.

Font Capability

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 support outline fonts for both Double-Byte (DBCS) and Single-Byte (SBCS) character sets. Since outline fonts are resolution independent, the same fonts can be used with printing with 240 dpi or 300 dpi resolution in any of the 4 supports print rotations. Outline fonts can be downloaded to the printer from PSF libraries. A wide range of outline font type styles in a variety of language families are also available as resident fonts on the 4000's hard disk.

Raster pattern fonts at 240 dpi are supported in SBCS and DBCS formats when printing in 240 dpi resolution. 300 dpi raster SBCS fonts will be supported when printing in 300 dpi resolution.

Raster fonts must be downloaded from PSF host libraries in the resolution and size required for printing. Font sizes from 4 to 72 points (approximately 1 inch high) are supported. Customers must verify the legibility of the 4-point font sets in their applications. Only one copy of a font is required for all 4 font rotations in the printer. The font is oriented for printing at print time.

Raster fonts are supported by all PSF platforms. Printer resident outline fonts will be supported by all PSFs at printer General Availability (GA). Host-downloaded outline fonts will be supported by all PSF platforms except PSF/VM within six months of printer GA. Resident outline fonts are not supported when using the DPF function of PSF for OS2.

Resident IPDS Fonts

The IBM AFP Expanded Core font set is supported as scalable Type 1 outline fonts depending on PSF support. The IBM AFP Expanded Core font set is contained in the AFCCU's hard disk with the default font of Courier Roman Medium 12 pitch (10 point).

Storage Capability

The IBM Infoprint 4000-IS1 and IS2 utilize the latest AFCCU with 64 MB of standard memory for pattern storage, page buffer storage and control storage. The Function Enhancement-PCI feature (#4440 and #4441) increase the memory to 128 MB. The Function/Performance Enhancement feature (#4445) increase the memory to 256 MB. Additional memory of up to 256 MB, depending on processor, may be purchased.

Human Factors

The IBM Infoprint 4000 family is designed for efficient ease of operation, service, and installation. Accepted human factors principles have been applied specifically to frequent access areas such as automatic paper threading and the operator interfaces. The touch screen operator panel/display is one of the human factors features intended to improve and enhance the human interface with the overall printer-control or host-managed system.

Environment Impact Assessment Information

  • Volatile organic compounds emitted from the IBM Infoprint 4000 model IS1 and IS2 printers pose no health concern either singularly or collectively at various toner coverages tested.
  • The IBM Infoprint 4000 model IS1 and IS2 toner and developer mix does not present environmental problems provided the same care is taken with the mix as with other electrophotographic materials of a similar nature.
  • The toner collected in the toner waste bottle and fine filter poses no health and environmental problems, provided the same care is taken with the bottle and filter as with other similar electrophotographic materials.
  • The selenium carryout with used brushes poses no disposal problems as per the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines. The used brushes can be placed in the normal trash to be disposed in the local landfill.
  • The photoconductor drum data obtained to date reveals no concerns to the environment. A drum return plan has been implemented to ensure the used drums are returned to the manufacturer.
  • The dermal and hypersensitivity tests with the toner reveal no health concerns. These studies were conducted utilizing (or implementing) the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) good laboratory practices regulations.

Print-to-Perforation Capability

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 are designed to print to the perforation at rated speed. As with other print-to-perforation printers, print quality degradation will occur near the perforation with fanfold paper that "tents" (that is, retains a "memory" of the fold). There will be no degradation at distances from the perforation of 1/3-inch (8.5 mm) for character data, OCR, or bar codes and 1/2-inch (12.7 mm) for solid area fill, logos, or images. With a roll-feed paper input no change in print quality should be apparent at distances of 2 mm from the perforation.

Footprint/Layout

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 printers each occupy approximately 24 square feet (2.26 square meters) of floor space with the stacker at maximum extension.

Operator Controls

The standard display and operator input functions of the IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 are provided via the XGA touch screen operator console. The touch screen operator console is the primary control panel utilized by both the operator and IBM customer engineer.

An operator alert facility that includes a flashing light and an audible alarm with volume control is located on top of a pedestal that is mounted on the top of the AFCCU module, which is attached to the right side of the print engine. The operator alert, mounted flush with the top of the AFCCU, reaches about 8 inches (200 mm) above the top of the AFCCU and overall print engine top. There is also a jack/plug for remote attachment of operator attention equipment (using customer-supplied power).

An Enhanced Operator Console feature is also available for the Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2. This feature includes new hardware (keyboard, mouse, and flat-panel touch-screen display) and a new Graphic User Interface (GUI) that provide a very versatile operator interface for improved productivity and operations control.

Direct-printing

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 may be used as a direct output device (direct-printing) when attached to an MVS host system. When the IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 are in direct-printing mode, Print Services Facility/MVS (PSF/MVS) provides exclusive use of the printer for a particular application. The user with direct control of the IBM Infoprint 4000 model IS1 and IS2 cannot take advantage of system-assisted restart, data set checkpointing, multiple data set processing, or use of operator commands available through JES to control the printer.

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 printers operate in a class A1 environment and will meet or exceed all worldwide regulations as they apply to "environmental impact" for business machines of this type.

System/370 Parallel Channel

For S/370 parallel channel attachment, a control unit position on a S/370 parallel block multiplexer channel is required on an IBM 4361, 4381, 3090(TM), ES/9370(TM), or ES/9000(TM) processor.

The following processors are also supported for S/370 parallel channel attachment, Parallel Enterprise Server Models R1, R2, and R3 S/390 G3 Enterprise Server, and the S/390 Multiprise(TM) 2000.

Attachment is also supported via the 9034 ESCON converter model 1.

The S/370 Channel is supported in MVS, VM, and VSE operating system environments.

ESCON Channel

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 may be attached natively to ESCON channels.

  • Note that when attached via ESCON, the IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 are supported on the MVS, VM, and VSE operating systems only.

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 may also be attached to selected PS/2, RS/6000, AS/400 models using Token-Ring (TCP/IP), or Ethernet (TCP/IP).

Attachment is also supported via the 9032/9033 ESCON Directors, and 9036 ESCON Remote Channel Extender.

Token-Ring (TCP/IP) Attachment

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 are connected to the host Token-Ring through the IBM Token-Ring cabling via the Token-Ring High-Performance adapter, which is contained in the AFCCU.

The attachment card and token-ring adapter cable P/N 53F3930 (approximately 4.6 m (15 ft)) in length are included with the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2.

The control unit can be attached to either a 16Mbit/sec or a 4Mbit/sec Token-Ring LAN.

The TCP/IP Token Ring Attachment will attach to the following devices:

  • 8228 Token Ring Multistation Access Unit attached to an AS/400, PS/2, or RS/6000 processor.
  • 8230 Token Ring Network Controller Access Unit attached to an AS/400, PS/2, or RS/6000 processor.
  • 8228 Token Ring Multistation Access Unit attached to a 3172, 3174, 3745, 3725 or 3720 attached to a 3090, ES/9000, 308X or 4381 processor.
  • 8230 Token Ring Multistation Access Unit attached to a 3172, 3174, 3745, 3725, or 3720 attached to a 3090, ES/9000, 308X or 4381 processor.

The printer may be located at a maximum distance of 100 meters (333ft.) from the 8228 Multistation Access Unit or 8230 Controlled Access Unit.

The distance between the 8228 Multistation Access Units can be increased with either the 8220 or 8219 Optical Fiber Repeater.

Ethernet (TCP/IP) Attachment

An Ethernet Adapter Card (P/N 00G3369) is supplied with Specify Feature 9990 and Special Feature 4161. This is installed in the processor of the AFCCU of the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2. The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 may then be attached to an Ethernet LAN via one of the following means:

Select Medium Modifications (SMM)

IPDS supports a command, Select Medium Modifications (SMM), which selects one or more actions or modifications to be taken or inhibited on the current sheet of physical media (paper) being processed by post processing equipment.

The SMM command is used to invoke processing options through the Advanced Function Post-processing Interface, Special Feature 4720. SMM support is not available on all PSF platforms. (See the "Data Stream and Object Architectures IPDS Reference" S544-3417).

PAGE POSITIONING

Cut Sheet Emulation (CSE)

A special case of page positioning, Cut-Sheet Emulation (CSE), can be set at the Infoprint 4000 control panel. When the CSE option is set, jobs designed for printing on a cut-sheet printer will automatically print 2-up with no change to the AFP form definition for the job. Logically, the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 will split each sheet of paper in half, parallel to the tractors, and treat each half as a separate sheet of paper. It is a customer responsibility to ensure that the Infoprint 4000 is loaded with paper that is wide enough to accommodate two application pages side by side.

IBM Infoprint 4000 CSE options allow a choice of different page arrangements to accommodate different post-processing requirements. Pages can be placed sequentially from left to right, or from right to left, and printed either right-side-up or upside-down. The customer can combine these options to accommodate specific post-processing requirements for each printer.

When the CSE option is set, all jobs sent to the printer will print 2-up side-by side unless:

  • N_UP is specified in the form definition. If so, the N_UP definition will be honored and CSE will not be used.
  • The PSF print driver enables page size verification and disables CSE for pages that will not fit 2-up.

CSE requires support in PSF for enablement. The IBM Infoprint 4000 console option for CSE will have no effect unless the printer is driven by a PSF that is enabled for CSE. CSE support is available via APAR OW19103 to PSF/MVS 2.2. This support includes a page-size verification option.

Options For Multiple-up Printing

With the addition of N_UP page positioning and Cut-Sheet Emulation (CSE) customers now have several options for formatting multiple-up application pages on a single printer sheet:

  • "Multiple-up" defined in the page definition resource
  • N_UP defined in the form definition resource
  • Cut-Sheet Emulation (CSE) selected at the 4000 operator console

Multiple-up printing has always been available for line format print date on AFP printers. It achieves the appearance of multiple pages per sheet by formatting multiple groups of print lines as a single AFP page. The output is still one AFP page per side of a printer sheet.

By contrast, N_UP and CSE allow the placement of multiple AFP pages per side of a sheet. Each page can use different medium maps (form definition copygroups), and for line data each page can have different data maps (page definition pageformats). Unlike multiple-up, N_UP and CSE can be used with AFPDS (MO: DCA) print data as well as with line format print data.

Applications printing simple line data that uses the same formatting for each page can easily be handled with traditional multiple-up. They can be handled as well by N_UP or CSE providing they do not require more than 4 pages per side for N_Up, or more than 2 for CSE, and providing the printer supports N_UP and CSE.

Applications printing line data with multiple page formats should consider N_UP or CSE for formatting multiple pages per sheet. Applications printing AFPDS (MO: DCA) print data cannot use traditional multiple-up processing. These applications must use either N_UP or CSE to place multiple pages on a sheet of paper.

CSE can be used whenever the desired output is 2 equal-size pages side by side on the same sheet of paper. CSE is especially useful for moving applications from 8.5"x11" forms to 2-up printing on 11"x17" forms. No change is required to the AFP form definition resource to enable CSE 2_Up printing. The same form definition can be used for printing 1-up on 8.5"x11" forms or 2-up on 11"x17" forms.

N_UP is needed for applications that require pages of different sizes or page positioning other than 2-up side by side. Instructions must be placed in the form definition for N_UP printing.

ESCON Channel

  • The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 attaches to the ESCON channel for all IBM ESCON-capable processors/servers. The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 supports a maximum cable length of 43 km - 20km (65,617 ft.) from the ESCON Extended Distance Feature (XDF) channel to the first ESCON Director or the 9036 ESCON Remote Channel Extender with the XDF port, 20 km from first to second ESCON Director or the 9036 ESCON Remote Channel Extender with the XDF port, and 3 km (9,843 ft.) from the second ESCON Director or the 9036 Remote Channel Extender to the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1. The IBM 9036 ESCON Remote Channel Extender can be used when common carrier fiber optic connections are required. The maximum distance is 43 km. Jumper Cables

Fiber-optic jumper cables are required for attaching a IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 to ESCON channels (as well as the 9032 ESCON Director Model 2, 9033 ESCON Director Model 1, or the 9036 ESCON Remote Channel Extender.). For initial equipment orders and feature MES orders, one standard length duplex-to-duplex 62.5/125 micron fiber-optic jumper cable will be provided, at no additional charge, for each ESCON feature intended for ESCON channel connection (if # 9970 is specified on the initial order or if special feature #4131 is ordered.)

Note: Cables ARE NOT shipped with the product or the feature. While provided by IBM and included in the price of the product or feature, they are shipped from a different physical location and must be ordered separately for the product or feature by your IBM representative.

Custom cable lengths in one-foot increments, chargeable to the customer, are available between 4 meters (12 feet) to a maximum of 500 meters (1640 feet). If custom-length cables are to be used, refer to the IBM publication PLANNING FOR ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS CONNECTION LINKS (GA23-0367).

Trunk Cables

Fiber-optic trunks terminated in distribution panels are recommended in large single-room data centers, multiple-room and multiple-floor data centers, and in data centers spread among buildings.

The ESCON Adapter features supports fiber-optic links that include 62.5/125 micron, 800MHz-km bandwidth trunk cable up to three kilometers, and 50/125 micron, 800MHz-km bandwidth trunk cable up to two kilometers.

IBM publication PLANNING FOR ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS CONNECTION LINKS (GA23-0367) should always be consulted when customer requirements include fiber-optic trunk facilities.

Use of trunks will require additional jumper cables and components, which are a customer responsibility. In addition to the IBM duplex-to-duplex fiber-optic jumper cables supplied with the ESCON Adapter features, other jumper cables such as duplex-to-ST** and duplex-to-FC/PC may be purchased from IBM. Also, distribution panel adapters to connect the IBM duplex connector to ST or FC/PC connectors can be purchased from IBM. These additional jumper cables and components are available from IBM or from IBM Authorized Cabling Distributors. For the name of the nearest distributor call 1-800-IBM-2468.

Cable Information

Token-Ring (TCP/IP) Cable Information

The IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 Printer is connected to the host Token-Ring through the IBM Token-Ring cabling via the Token-Ring High-Performance adapter, which is contained in the AFCCU.

The attachment card and token-ring adapter cable P/N #53F3930 (approximately 4.6 m (15 ft)) are included with the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1. The adapter cable attaches either to an 8228-001 (Token-Ring Multistation Access Unit) or an 8230-001 (Token-Ring Network controller Access Unit). For cable attachment to the CPU see the specific CPU cabling information.

The control unit can be attached to either a 16Mbit/sec or a 4Mbit/sec Token-Ring LAN.

(#4110) S/370 Parallel Channel Attachment

This feature provides a System/370 Parallel Channel Attachment. If the customer chooses the S/370 parallel channel as the standard attachment option, #9960 should be specified for that option. This feature (#4110) would be ordered if the customer desired a second S/370 parallel channel, or if the customer's standard option was ESCON.

The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 can maintain a connection with either of the channels as a single device. The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 can be configured for 'manual' (operator selected) or for 'dynamic' (on demand from the host) switching. In manual mode, the channels may be connected to the same host or to two independent hosts, with one channel being enabled at a time. In dynamic mode, the two parallel channels may be connected to the same host or to two hosts that are tightly coupled.

Note: Dynamic channel switching is not supported between "mixed" attachments (that is between parallel and ESCON channels).

Feature code 4121 enables the native attachment of an IBM 4000 model IS1 and IS2 Advanced Function Printer to a LAN via Token-Ring (TCP/IP). This attachment may coexist with a System/370 Channel or ESCON attachment. Only one of the LAN attachments (Token-Ring or Ethernet) is permitted.

(#4131) ESCON Channel Attachment

(Only one of either #4110, #4121, #4131, or #4165 on each IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2. Maximum quantity of Specify Feature #9960, #9970, #9980, #9990 and Special Feature #4110, #4121, #4131, #4165 is two.)

This feature provides the ESCON Channel Attachment. As a reminder, the customer has the option of choosing one of two attachments as standard when ordering the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2. If the customer chooses ESCON as the standard attachment, #9970 should be specified. If the customer desired to purchase a second ESCON channel attachment, or if the customer selected the System/370 Parallel Channel as standard and wants the ESCON channel as the second attachment, this feature code would be chosen.

If two ESCON channels are connected, the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 can maintain a connection with either of the channels as a single device. The IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 can be configured for either one or two ESCON channels. If both channels are enabled, the two channels may be connected to the same host or to two hosts that are tightly coupled.

Note: Dynamic channel switching is not supported between "mixed" attachments (that is between parallel and ESCON channels).

In an Infoprint 4000 IS1 or IS2 with feature codes #9940, #4440, or #4445 installed the ESCON Attachment supports a Multi-Host Environment.

This feature provides a "Multi-Host Environment" ESCON configuration option that, when used with PSF ASSIGN/UNASSIGN support, guarantees a printer on a shared attachment cannot be on-line to multiple hosts concurrently. A second host trying to assign the printer will be denied access with a notice that the printer is assigned elsewhere. The printer cannot be successfully varied on to the second host until the operator drains and varies it off-line to the first host. Multi-Host Environment support increases configuration flexibility and simplifies operational procedures for ESCON attached printers.

You may order one ESCON feature card for your printer and make use of Multi-Host support. This can be accomplished if your printer is attached to a Host that has EMIF with multiple system images or if the printer is attached to an ESCON Director, which in turn is attached to more than one Host system.

You may also order two ESCON feature cards and get all of the above support on two ESCON links at the same time.

The ESCON attachment may be shared between multiple MVS and OS/390 systems, multiple LPARs or system images. However, one printer (4000 IS1 or IS2) cannot be used by multiple PSF hosts concurrently. To allow access by a different host, the operator must drain the printer and vary it off-line to one host before varying it on-line to the second host.

Multi-Host Environment is supported only by PSF on OS/390 V1R3.0 or higher. All host systems (which may be VM guests) must be OS/390 V1R3.0 or higher and have PSF support which is provided in either PSF V3.1.0 for OS/390 and higher, or in PSF/MVS V2.2 with APAR OW29992. If these conditions are not met, and Multi-Host Environment is enabled on the printer, PSF may not be able to access the printer.

This feature provides a native attachment of:

  • Infoprint 4000 Model IS1,
  • Infoprint 4000 Model IS2

printers to a LAN via Ethernet (TCP/IP). The attachment can be either 10 Mbps (10 Million Bits per second) or 100 Mbps (100 Million Bits per second) enabled. This interface will automatically sense and emulate the data rate and transfer mode (half duplex or full duplex) of the Ethernet hub, or it can be manually set to match data rate and transfer mode.

This provides the advantages of transferring data at a faster rate which, in general, implies better printer throughput and overall system performance.

This feature may be ordered in addition to the standard 64MB. The total number of available sets of memory sockets in the AFCCU is 2. One of the sets is occupied by the standard 64 MB SIMM; therefore, only one additional memory feature can be ordered.

(#4404) Developer Cart

In addition to the Developer Cart shipped with the Additional CCD feature, (FN 4480, 4481), one additional Developer Cart is required per print room for the removal of the CCD that was initially installed in the printer.

The developer carts are used so that the developer unit does not have to be lifted or carried by the operator. The cart attaches to the printer so that the developer unit can slide onto the cart when it is being switched. Likewise, the new developer unit can be easily slid off the cart and installed in the printer.

Developer carts can be used with any developer. Once a CCD has been installed in a printer, the cart that was shipped with the CCD can be used to remove a CCD from another printer. Developer units are unique to a given printer.

This feature allows your operators to automate the control of the critical basic parameters of the printer through the use of the IBM exclusive Infoprint Operations Architecture. The Infoprint Operations Architecture is integral to the Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU). Infoprint Operator Control allows your operator to store the critical printer parameters through the Infoprint Operations Architecture at the printer and then invoke them when the operator assigns a specific Form Definition at the printer. The critical parameters that are currently automated include:

(#4464) Form Identification Feature

The Form Identification Feature ensures that the form required for a specific application, or print job, is actually the form loaded in the selected printer.

The Form Identification Feature reads a preprinted barcode as the form is moving through the printer. The form barcode is checked at two levels.

  • First, it is checked at the host where the form barcode specified in the Define Forms configuration is compared to the form defined by VFYSETUP.
  • Second, the barcode specified in the Define Form configuration is compared to the form number read from the preprinted barcode on the loaded form.

If the form identification barcode specified in the Define Form configuration does not match the form identification number specified by the VFYSETUP, then the host will not send the job to the printer. Therefore, the form identification barcode specified in the Define Form configuration must match the form identification number read from the loaded form or the printer is stopped with a form mismatch error.

The use of this feature does require that a barcode be preprinted on the forms. The barcode is a custom binary barcode that can represent up to 65,535 decimal form numbers. For those customers who are using alpha-numeric form numbers, some restrictions do apply. The alpha characters are limited to A, B, C, D, E, and F; and the number is limited to 4 characters. When using the alpha characters for specifically assigned purposes, the form number is assumed to be hexadecimal. The translation from form number to barcode, is directly from that 4 character hexadecimal form number to the binary barcode. When using alpha characters in the form number, care must be taken not to duplicate the decimal equivalent form number.

In today's high-speed, high-throughput printing environments even a little time lost printing on incorrect forms can generate an awful lot of waste product. In the worst case scenario, especially where form stock is similar in appearance and/or size, a deliverable printed on an incorrect form is actually delivered to the final customer.

The value of the Form Identification Feature is in increased operations performance and quality, reduced operations costs, and improved operations control.

(#4565) Productivity Tracking Feature

This feature provides the necessary microcode to allow selected Infoprint 4000 and Infoprint 4100 Printers to send production data to a Windows Server attached via an Ethernet LAN to the printer Control Unit.

The LAN attached server must have the Infoprint Productivity Suite Program Product (5739-AA8) with the Productivity Tracking feature installed.

The production data includes such things as: foot count of pages printed, toner changes, error frequency, and estimated foot count per job.

The Productivity Tracker feature must be ordered for each printer control unit that will be connected to a Windows Server. Each Server can be connected to multiple printer control units, and each server can have multiple clients. The clients can view data and reports.

This feature is not supported by PSF/VM or PSF/VSE and cannot be used with these host systems.

(#4710) Pre/post-processing Interface (1 is standard)

Provides the electrical interface for attachment of OEM pre-and post-processing equipment to the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 similar to this same feature on the IBM 3900-001 and 3900-0W1. This feature is also similar to RPQ 8A5019 for the IBM 3800 and RPQ 8A5022 on the IBM 3835 Advanced Function Printer.

Note: While the function of this feature code 4710 is similar to that of previous feature codes 4710 and RPQs 8A5019 and 8A5022 referenced above, the actual hardware is different. Previous feature code 4710 and RPQ 8A5019/8A5022 hardware cannot be used with the IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2.

This feature provides control of add-on pre/post-processing devices (such as continuous forms stackers, envelope inserting equipment, roll-feed equipment, among others). Additionally, this feature disables the standard stacker functions. This feature includes the function of RPQ #8B3901 and cannot be installed with this RPQ.

The capabilities of the 4710 have been expanded with the new IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 to include host managed paper jam recovery out through the customer's post-processing equipment.

A maximum of three of this feature code may be installed on a IBM Infoprint 4000 model IS1 and IS2 or a total of two of this feature code and one of the feature code 4720 (Advanced Function Post-processing Interface) may be installed. The need for one or more of these feature codes is totally dependent on the customer's applications and objectives. These should be well understood by the IBM representative through communication with the customer. Assistance in planning for the appropriate features can be readily obtained from the IBM Printing Systems Division at PRTHELP at BLDVMB.

Suitable vendor post-processing equipment is recommended when printing forms longer than 14 inches (356 mm) and less than 17 inches (432 mm) in length. Note that this feature must be installed to disable the standard stacker for these form lengths.

(#4720) Advanced Function Post-Processing Interface

Provides the electrical interface for attachment of OEM post-processing equipment to the IBM Infoprint 4000 model IS1 and IS2. This feature provides architected software and communications control of add-on pre/post-processing devices such as printers using nonelectrophotographic technology, MICR impact printers, or selectable color printers. When this feature is to be used to attach the MICR impact printer, refer to the "Specify Features" section to specify the appropriate MICR font tape. ALSO NOTE: MICR printer hardware support is currently available for the IBM Infoprint 4000 printers with throughput speeds in 2-up 8.5"x11", side-by-side portrait format of 354 IPM for IS1 model and 452 IPM for IS2 model.

This feature may co-reside with one of feature code 4710. A total of one of this feature code may be ordered.

This feature is required for Select Medium Modifications (SMM) support. Select Medium Modifications (SMM) definition:

IPDS supports a command, Select Medium Modifications (SMM), which selects one or more actions or modifications to be taken or inhibited on the current sheet of physical media (paper) being processed by post-processing equipment.

The SMM command is used to invoke processing options through the Advanced Function Post-processing interface, feature code #4720. SMM support is not available on all PSF platforms. (Refer to Data Stream and Object Architectures, IPDS Reference S544-3417-04).

Note that while the function of this feature number 4720 is similar to that of previous feature numbers 4720, the actual hardware may be different.

Previous feature numbers 4720 that were used with the IBM 3900-0W1 may be used with the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2. However, those feature codes #4720 that were used with the IBM 3900-001 cannot be used with the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2.

This feature code supplies fuser hardware that allows an IP 4000 to print on heavy forms. This feature only supports forms with a paper smoothness of 70-120 Sheffield units. In addition, the Enhanced Printing Adaptor Kit (#4540) is required for all models of the Infoprint 4000 except the ID5 and ID6.

Supplies

Supplies used with the IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 are the same as those used with the 3900-0W1.

Lexmark International, Inc. markets IBM supplies. Supplies can be purchased from Lexmark Authorized Supplies Dealers or, in the US from Lexmark Telemarketing Operations. Choosing the right supplies is very important with the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2. For optimum print quality and reliable performance, the use of IBM supplies is recommended. Supplies are purchase-only items. The customer is responsible for ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of supplies. At the time of sale of the IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Advanced Production Printers, the IBM(TM) Printing Systems Division representative will give customers a list of the alternative ways to order supplies, advise them to order supplies immediately, and suggest they consider a supply agreement. (Many Authorized Supplies Dealers offer supply agreements.) Supply agreements often offer customers price discounts, price protection for one year, established shipping schedules, and reduced administrative expenses.

It is recommended that customers maintain a 1-to 2-month stock of supplies on hand.

Material Safety Data Sheets (OSHA Form 20) for IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 supplies with the IBM logo are available in the U.S. by calling 800-IBM-4333. You will need to provide the seven-digit part number or the machine model number and supply type, for example, IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1. Outside the US, contact your local Lexmark Supplier.

For average yields for all supplies, refer to the "IBM Infoprint 4000 IS1 and IS2 Introduction and Planning Guide" (G544-5427) for approximate yields when used with "Multi-Roll Developer" Mix (P/N 70X7426). Yields will vary with toner coverage, machine settings, paper type and size, and environmental conditions. Applications with extensive bar codes or solid area fill can expect to achieve the yields lower than that achieved with the average text page.

The approximate average yields are not a warranty or guarantee of minimum life, and are provided to assist in initial supplies planning. Actual usage should be used to establish the supply's life in your applications.

Regular Supply Items:

  • "Multi-Roll Developer" Toner (P/N 70X7425):
    • Unit: 1,360 gram bottle. Part number represents one bottle.
    • Packaging: Eight bottles per carton.
    • Minimum Order Qty: Eight of P/N 70X7425, which equals 1 carton.
  • Enhanced Printing Toner (P/N 1402833):
    • The new toner is a polyester based toner. It will be packaged in a new bottle having a slightly different interlock and a GREEN cap. The different interlock will prevent the new toner bottle from being attached to the Toner Inlet of a printer not having the Enhanced Printing Toner Adapter Kit installed.
    • When printing at 4% coverage on 100 square inches per foot, the Yield (Note 1) = 48,500 feet per 1.5kg (3.3lb.) bottle.
    • High-Speed Printers (Model IS2, ID3, ID4) and High-Resolution (Models IR1, IR2, IR3, and IR4) may experience a yield approximately 10% less (43,600 feet per 1.5kg bottle).
  • "Multi-Roll Developer" Mix (P/N 70X7426):
    • Unit: 4 kilogram bottle. Part number represents one bottle.
    • Packaging: Two bottles per carton.
    • Minimum Order Qty: Two of P/N 70X7426, which equals one carton.
  • Enhanced Printing Developer (P/N 69G7379):

    The new developer will be delivered in a new bottle with a GREEN cap. The developer yield is as follows:

Maintenance Supply Items:

Fuser oil, oiler belt, and the fine filter are maintenance supply items that are provided under the IBM Monthly Maintenance Charge. Approximately 90 days stock of these items are shipped with the printer. Follow-on stocks of these maintenance supplies are ordered by the customer through IBM. An 800 telephone number for ordering follow-on maintenance supplies is provided with the initial shipment that arrives with the printer.

Maintenance Supply Items may also be purchased directly from Lexmark should a customer have the need. (Order using 800-438-2468)

  • P/N 1372463 Fuser Oil:

Warranty for all supplies is one year from the date of purchase stated on the purchase receipt. Supply warranties are only for defects in materials and workmanship at the time of shipment and are not for normal wear and tear, nor for any usage minimum. IBM supplies are manufactured to very high quality standards. However, if you believe you are due a warranty return, you should return the supply in its original package or a package from the replacement supply to your point of purchase with an explanation of the problem, a print sample, and the approximate feet run on the supply.
